if it helps you...my CG is a lot stronger than my military press. my difference is about 60lbs

I'm not sure of the mechanical correlation between the two lifts but come to think of it, my CG bench is about the same as my military. The only variable is reppage. I can hit 225 on CG bench for between 6 and 8 reps. And then I can military 225 for 6-10 depending on my energy level for the day. I would assume for you, it would mean that your tri's are just strong. When you military press, there is more of a dependency on anterior and some medial delt utilization as you should not really be locking out. With CG bench you eliminate a huge portion of delt and pec utilization and rely more soley on your tri's. By comparison, your tri's are obviously more powerful. My tri's are fairly strong, but I have done a lot of work within the last 6 months to bring up my shoulder strength, so I think I have more of a balance because of this.

im waaay stronger on cg bench than military press- 2x as strong. matter of fact, my close grip bench is better than my normal bench right now, but im still trying to get a solid muscle base going.

this depends. if we're talking seated then yeah i can probably use the same weight as cg bench or maybe more. but if it's standing im a good 40 pounds behind.

I dont know my exact 1RM on CG or Mp's but i can tell you my CG is way higher..ive done over 315 for reps on CG (quite some time ago) ihave yet to try 315 military press lol..would be cool though!!!

lol. It isnt going to be much longer and i am gonna try 315 on military, i usually rep 275 for 10-12. However, my close-grip is much higher, rep 315 for 10 and have done 365 for 5. So, on an average day there is about a 50lb difference between military and close.

damn thanks a lot guys this thread blew up since i posted it a few hours ago. i just thought it seemed weird that my tr's were stronger than my delts, even though tri's and delts are both 3 muscle groups each. its good to hear that im not the only one, in fact it seems like almost everyone else has a stronger Cg Bench than military, i just find that interesting consideringi thought i had weak shoulders, guess ive brough them up now. thanks a lot, ill try to spread the karam around untill i cant.

Gotta remember that no matter how much you try to isolate on CG you are still using your chest and shoulders. Whereas on military it is just shoulders and tris. Also the overhead motion is less stable on the joint so a lot of your strength gets sapped into stabilizing instead of pressing.

Cheers,
Scotsman

yeah see i figured that too, since im smaller, my grip is pretty close, shit i think there may be 4 inches between my hands

My best close grip is 405 x 2 and 412 x 1. My best standing overhead log press so far has been 336.5 x 1.

I can close grip basically exactly or REALLY near what I can flat bench press.

I GOT 315 for 3 today on MP!

Maybe, not super defined or anything like that, but the cuts are coming along. I guess i was gifted in getting big round shoulders that can take a ton of abuse.

or gifted all around in stregth and size, you can shoulder press more than i can bench, when i see guys at my college gym, i can almost always Cg bench more than they can bench. but you can CG bench more than i can benh. pretty sick, keep training

hey bro, i was thinking about something about your CG. while i was at the gym, this guy was doing CG, and it made me think to ask...how close of a grip do you use? do you have your grip so that you index finger is on the center knurling or do you have them out so that your pinkie finger is on the knurling? this of course depends on how your bar is set up. most bars have a center knurling, then a smooth part, then more knurling then the ring (the smooth ring on the bar that marks the widest grip possible for a PL comp. lift) then more knurling.
i use a grip that puts my pinkie just inside of the knurling. IMO i dont see any point in going any closer than that, because when i do it hurts my wrist.

well your a lot taller than me most likely, my shoulders arent as wide, and i put my pinkie an inch in from the knurling, i feel it really well in the tri's and i like the results ive been getting. i dont think they are too close....the smooth area in the middle inbetween the knurling is prolly about a foot...i dont think im putting them too close..but ive been getting good results so i dunno...thanks for the help tho man

I can can do 12+ reps on CG what I can only max on MP.

Definitely tri's dominant.

The triceps are the strongest smaller muscle group in the upper body besides the traps and lats I believe.

i noticed i left something out in my last post. i put my pinkie just inside the knurling with my hand on the smooth part of the bar, leaving the center knurling between my hands. i just realized that i kind of made it sound like my hands were almost touching each other

Im lucky in the fact that my body is made to do crazy weight, i have a big barrel shaped chest and huge round shoulders. So, pressing movements come real natural for me. However, someone who has a flat chest has to work twice as hard as i do on their pressing movements to get them were they want them. Plus, ive been training for about 10 years now, the past 6 non-stop.

Im 25, weigh 255-60 (varies), and 5'10.5"

My guess is that you are still growing, so you have plenty of years to catch and surpass me. i know a few guys who didnt hit their primes till they were in their 30s.

cwick, any idea on your bodyfat? Just curious.

As for having a stronger CG than military, I'd say that's normal. I think Scotsman put it best, however, so I won't attempt to add in any reasoning behind it as I agree with his.

I would love to tell you what my bf% is, but i have absolutely no clue. I have a small gut (maybe not small since ive never seen my abs, but at least i stay warm in the winter, lol). Im guessing 15-17%, since i dont carry much fat in my arms or legs.

Ill start watching your thread as to see what your numbers are. Every week i post my chest workout on WalkingBeast's page to give him some inspiration and see the method to my madness.
