I love my job. I really don't have any complaints- i like the amount of work i'm given, i like my coworkers, my boss, the people I manage. it's fairly close to home (as close as you can get when you live near nothing)- about 15 minutes away.
the salary is ... fair. I mean, it's average. I thought it was better than it was when i started, but i'm realizing now it's just ok.

so... there are two job openings at big companies that would work for me. Both have shown interest in my resume. One is a HUGE pharmaceutical company that's probably 50 minutes away. I'd be a product manager. and the pay is 20k more a year than what I make now.

The other is close- could even be 15 minutes away (it's in another state) for a huge consumer electronics manufacturer (like Bosse or walkman). That would be for a marketing manager and would also pay 20k more than i make now.

would you consider moving jobs for more money if you loved the one you're at?

Im torn. Loving your job is a rare thing. Grass isnt always greener. Will the extra $20k a year have a significant impact on your quality of life? Is it worth it to take a chance that you wont like the new job? I see no reason why you shouldnt at least interview for the other jobs and then take it from there.

15 Minutes away is not far at all. Wouldn't have to move if you got that one. I think 20k extra would have a significant impact on your life.

It sucks to leave a job you love, but what does the future look like at that job? Could your management where you're at be changed. Is there opportunity for advancement at current job, other jobs? Did you notice how the workers were at the other places? Does your job field have lay off's regularly enough to where it would benefit you to stay somewhere where you have some seniority? Some questions to ask yourself.

Take care.

I don't think 20k would make that much difference for you Stillietto. It would me, but I think you're pretty set with money.
But, I don't really know how much you love your current job. There's a bunch of jerkholes there arent there?
I recently decided not to change jobs. I was offered more money but it would take me 5 years to get the vacation I get now, and I like my hours. That ended up being more important.

i would move for more money provided i was sure i would like the job, people, etc.

location would be key to. i wont move to canada for at least another 50K :)

two things. . .

1. will the quality of your life suffer permanently??

e.g. 50 minutes one way is 70 extra minutes of round-trip commuting a day. . .over the course of the typical work year. . .taking vacation and holidays into consideration. . .70 minutes x 336 workdays = 23,520 extra minutes / 1,440 minutes in a day = 16.33 :worried: and/or, will more time be required in order to earn the extra 20 g's??

2. working in one state and living in another could have a whole other set of tax consequences if the two states do not have a reciprocal agreement.

thanks guys.

20k a year is a good amount of money nomatter who you are. it's more when you have 2 kids starting college in a year.

I haven't interviewed for either yet- i'm just thinking about things ahead of time. I may go on the interviews and decide I just can't do one commute or i may LOVE one or both companies- we shall see. There is some room for advancement in my company, but i'm already head of my own small department anyway.

Loving your job > money.

Is your career solely for a paycheck? You're in scary territory. If things 'go bad' at work, you'll hate your job.

If things 'go bad' at your new job (crappy boss, incompetence, draconian treatment, lousy co-workers, drama, etc.) you'll hate your job too.

Money winds up meaning little if you deal with stress all day, or wind up getting let-go, and now you have no job.

Compensation is important, but look at the whole picture. Even something like 'enjoying working with your cube-mate Bob all day, and afterwards we go for drinks' is worth something.

You could ask for a raise at your current job (esp if your current job is $20k under market salaries) but I don't know their financial picture. $20k is a lot money. Maybe you can get an add'l $10k increase? Are you an awesome worker at your current job that's worthy of demanding more money?

When I was young I took a job that offered the lowest salary, but the greatest chance for opportunity and advancement. It was a TV station. I worked 13 hour days, and was making 6 figures within 2 years.

Take some thought on this.

ahhhhh so sweet

I was offered a purchasing manager job for 70 grand a yrs, 5 weeks vacation, stock options and car allowance, I refused the job b/c it mean 90 mins in traffic one way and a 12 hrs work day along with 3 sat's a month. The money was not worth the stress.
Don't always let money be a motivator, being happy is much nicer than being a few grand richer.
But ya never know, you may be totally happy at a new job.

I'll let the guy's know. thanks.

If u like ur job, I would stay. Most people hate work. What would cause u more stress:
1. Not having the extra money
OR
2. possibly working somewhere u aren't happy

Dude, these jobs are Patronage jobs, you have to know someone in city hall...

$35/hour+ OT, Full Benny's and lots of treasures!
so you need some pull to get a job, huh?

I had a former army buddy from Chicago who told me that as a garbage man you make good money...at the time I thought he was full of it..he was right though..

Dayummmm! I only get 19/hour and people bleed and puke on me!

Nobledude said:
but MM has to pick up all the blood and puke for a change...

I never pick it up. I leave it where it falls. I let the nurses pick it up.
Plus, I bet 19bucks in Missouri is way more than 19bucks where he lives.

I'm also a relatively happy and easy going person anyway. there's a good chance i'd love my new job too.

I'm currently waiting to hear back about a raise, but I doubt it will be enough to make a difference.

Yeah, but I can work like 4 hours and get paid for 8 so it all works out.

Sounds like a good gig, to me. I beg to go home at 12 and get stuck on a 24. Sux.

20K may or may not be a lot depending what you make now. If I made $20K I'd be all over a 20K raise, like it or not. If I made $70K, which I do, I'd leave for 15K if the job was perfect - meaning I knew I'd love it and the commute wasn't any longer. 20K if I was kinda sure and the commute was the same. I need major cash to deal with commutes. That cuts into my cycling/gym time which means job is all I have time for.

If I'm making $100K like everyone else on EF I don't go anywhere for 20K. I'm already at the perfect job and besides, my fitness model/astrophysicist gf gets a big inheritance in a few years.

I got talked into a going to a start up again last summer, more money, more this, more that. So I quit my job (Left on good terms, gave 1 month notice) and gave it a try. After about three weeks at this new place I knew I made a big mistake. We had big clients, but the work SUCKED and I was unhappy. My training suffered, I was even a bigger a-hole then I am now. I lasted four months before I called my old job and they took me back with open arms *Hugs current employer*.

You can do what you like, but I will not get talked out of a job for a little bit more money, you can't buy my happieness. I mean 20k is only 1600 more a month than your making now (not sure what you make) but it can put you into a higher tax bracket and you could be in fact losing money each month. I’m single with no kids though.

I'm under 100k a year also... Don't have a super sports car or super nice house. Spend all my money on food and steriods these days he he. How ever I do drop coin on clothes, gotta look nice.

Paramedics in Seattle can make 75k a year, Medic One anyways. You guys should move here. Then you can come over and we can play tetris and watch cable.

I'm afraid you two will have to leave, unless you can prove you're part African-American. Then you can stay under an Affirmative Action mandate, like me.

That's because it costs more to live there. That's why. I already looked into all those gigs....but thanx.

Sorry. I'm mexican an Irish. My hubby is the whitest of white men. He gets sun burns if I open the curtains. Poor bastard.
I'm broke but my daddy is rich. Can I stay, please?

always go with your gut on these issues. your intuition will be your best guide. money is quantifiable happiness is not.

sometimes you just have to grease a few palms (more in the past however).

thank you.
I'm going to see this week. I should find out about a raise at my current job at the end of this week coming up or the week after. in the meantime, I'm expecting some interview calls to come up so i will see what happens with those. I don't have any decision to make yet.

I did send my resume to another company- 30 miles away. It's in my field, but the job seems a bit advanced for me. the salary is 100k a year with a 12,000k bonus. THAT would be sweet. I'm good at interviewing, so if they call me for one, it's a good sign.
