Cardio before or after weights?

New member
Cardio before or after weights when cutting is the goal.
what is the science based difference?

I know everybody does it after.

why?

thanks

before weights is pointless. your using energy stores for cardio that would be necessary for weight training. after weight training you continue to burn calories because the weight training session has utilized most of your energy stores so the post training cardio could dip into extra energy stores, ie fat. obviously its not that basic and probably the best route to take is am cardio with a quick 10 to 15 minutes post weights.

i am not a huge proponent of am cardio but when cutting i usually hit am and post weights.

I always do it after, save my strength for the weights.

It is kind of a catch 22

I never do cardio,

and when I do it after, I blow it off because I am too tired from the gym.

Depending on your goals...I'd say AM cardio...then in the evening when you go lift do about 15-20 minutes "light" cardio before...do weights then 30 min cardio after..

I guess every body is different, because i'v always have done it before my workouts. it gets my sweat on, and then im already for the weights.

When cutting, I do cardio by itself, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and I don't eat ANYTHING for an hour afterward. . .works great for me.

Do cardio AM first thing after rising from bed.

Cardio in Am is great. I usually do cardio then do lifting both im am. Too many times after lifting I am spent and am too tired to do cardio. Later that Day I may come back and do cardio again.

Cardio wkaes me up and gets me going to start lifing.

thats just me

Those of you that do AM cardio, do you go right into your workout or do you load back up on calories and come back later. Personally I like to do morning cardio, then have a good pre-wo shake and then do my weight training about 45 minutes later. Although I have a very flexible schedule and can get by with this. I would imagine most do not have the extra time for just "hangin out" so to speak.

you should usually try for 3 meals between cardio and weight training. following cardio with weights is sort of like stretching before lifting, bad idea. mainly because doing cardio, then having a shake, then lifting doesnt allow for the calories consumed to really be processed prior to hitting the iron. your entering the weight room on an empty tank.

also, the reason for the 3 meal seperation between cardio and lifting will allow - during cutting - to have a metabolic boost 2 times in one day without being calorie deficient for weight training - fat burning is what we are trying to do and in this scenario you have it twice without any negative feedback on your calorie consumption. if you go into the weight room empty your body will utilize all the aminos in your blood as energy and once they are gone muscle will start being broken down to create a surplus of aminos. this is also why having 15 to 20 grams of bcaas prior to training - during cutting - is a great idea. you provide the body what it needs in excess so it doesnt utilize whats already present as energy. the protein and aminos you eat throughout the day will be used to keep the anabolic environment and grow muscle rather than breaking down muscle to create more aminos.

Yeah I cannot do the am cardio, then weights at night thing due to time constraints. So I always do cardio after weights. I hate fucking cardio, but for me it is a neccessary evil. However, the weights are more important to me so I want to have all of my energy for them. Plus, you really tap into fat storage if you have already expended you readily available energy sources.

Interesting replies.
Thanks
Family commitments prevent me from doing anything in the morning.

My schedule usually allows me 60-75 total minutes in the gym. Obviously no time for chit chat or any social interaction.

So since April 1st I have been doing the cardio same time as work-out.

some times I will do weights first then do cardoi.then I get so fucken refrashed and siked up from the cardoi i go and lift some more weights.

afternoon workouts do a 10 minute powerwalk of sorts to warm up, then lift hard for 45-60 minutes, then cardio for as long as I have time for which is usually 45 minutes. If it's cut short then I make it up with a cardio only day sometime that week.
