Can someone explain why we should "Fear God"?

GinNJuice

New member
I hear lots of people qualifying their faith by saying that "I'm a god-fearing >enter religion<"

Why should we fear God? I thought "God" was forgiving and kind????

because God can't drive very well. when he gets behind the wheel, I'm scared to death. I think that is why he drives vicariously through so many NASCAR dudes.

Jesus on the other hand is a very good driver.

exactly - that dude is all about cars.

God is better at rap, evidenced by all the rap awards that give shout outs and props to him. I think he might be a producer.

Because 'God' represents an authoritative patriarch... THE authoritative patriarch. Fearing 'God' is like being a good little boy.

because God is gonna get pissed if you don't get back into the fields and stop bitching about plowing. if God doesn't like you or the work you do, then he will strike you down with some punk ass disease and you will probably go blind (that is usually from thinking about your boss' wife though).
God can see everything, so even if you aren't out on the fields, you still best be on your best behavior because he is all knowing - just like Santa Claus.
all this shit might seem like it isn't worth it, but it is, trust me. seriously - like one day, when you die a horribly tragic death at the hand of a flesh eating bacteria that you got from a shitty septic system that you had to clean out - well no worries! your soul (which is just like your body, but lighter and happier) will get to spend eternity (which is a really long time) up in the clouds where everything is wonderful and white and none of it smells like cow shit like it does down here.

want me to explain marriage to you too?

hmmm..... if I feared the drug dealer down the street when I was a kid, and he told me to sell his crack.... I should do it, because I feared him and he was an authoritative patriarch?

Well, if you want to avoid death, you probably will. That's the genius of religion. Some biologists muse at the intricacy of living organisms --- I muse at the ironic vice of religion.

Religion isn't ironic, it fills a compelling need. Humans need "purpose" and reasons for things. The mind tries to organize experiences/events into a coherent pattern. "Will of God" is coherent, even if many people in 2002 feel that it is a primitive/simplistic way of looking at the world.

How much progress did man make in the 20th century? What supplanted religion during this time period?:
-Bolshevism
-National Socialism
-Global Capitalism

Makes religion not seem so bad, does it?
I agree that we still probably need religion in some ways.

I still believe that religion is ironic, simply because I see lots of people fearing something that doesn't exist, denying themselves of their innate desires, etc.

I DON'T BELIVE IN ORGANIZED RELIGION THAT IF I DON'T GO TO CHURCH GODS GONNA MAKE MY DAY SHITTY. I DO BELIVE WHAT THE BIBLE SAY'S EVEN THOUGH I KNOW TONS OF YOU PEOPLE THINK I THINK OF MYSELF AS A SAINT BY FAR I'M NOT. BUT I WAS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER GOING TO BE A PREACHER SO I HAVE STUDIED THE BIBLE. IF SOMEONE CAN CREATE EVERYTHING AROUND US AND MAKE US SHOULD WE NOT FEAR HIM, HIS POWER. IT DOES'NT SAY FEAR HIM BECAUSE HE IS GONNA LIGHT YOUR ASS ON FIRE IT SAYS FEAR HIM AND FOLLOW WHAT HE SAYS BECAUSE HE WILL BE JUDGING US IN THE END WHERE WE ARE GONNA GO HEAVEN OR HELL BASED ON OUR FAITH, THIS IS WHAT BELIVERS SEE IT TO MEAN OR HOW I PERSEVE IT. SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT BELIVE WOULD NOT FEAR GOD BECAUSE THEY DON'T BELIVE WHAT IT SAYS IN THE BIBLE.

widelat,

I enjoy your post but how come you always use caps? It makes it very hard to read and caps in the internet mean that you are yelling what you are saying. You don't yell all the time do ya?

The reason we should fear God is because he made us and he doesn't like it when we don't do what he says that he knows is in our best interest. I mean didn't you fear your dad when you were growing up? I mean he is your dad(if h is a good dad) he will have your best interest at heart but if you screw up he is going to tan your hide. God is the same all except he doens't make errors like our parents do some time.

CURLING THAT IS THE BEST WAY TO EXPLAIN IT. THAT MAKES TOTAL SENSE. THE REASON I TYPE IN CAPS ALL THE TIME IS BECAUSE I ALWAYS HAVE AND IT GOT SO MANY PEOPLE ASKING THAT IF I DID NOT THEY WOULD KNOW THAT IT WAS NOT ME TYPING LIKE A CALLING CARD. I DID'NT KNOW IT MEANT I WAS YELLING I THOUGH THIS!!!!!!!!!!! MEANS I'M YELLING. BUT THATS WHY SO IF YOU EVER SEE ANY OF MY POST NOT IN CAPS IT AINT ME SORRY ITS HARD TO READ THOUGH. I THINK ITS FUNNY HOW MANY PEOPLE COMMENT ON IT THOUGH THATS WHY I KEPT DOING IT. BUT THAT WAS A GREAT EXAMPLE WE ARE GODS CHILDREN.

This is a serious question and I am genuinely curious. Is it the same kind of respect one would give his father?

Similar--but I think it goes way beyond that. Knowing that God is all-powerfull and that he formed man in His own hand. Its not real cut and dried--it is something that you learn in your walk with Him

Ok, I probably shouldn't simplify and categorize it like I did.

Thanks widelat. And I too think it is that simple. Christians are God's children and a Father takes care of his children. He not only disciplines them for their own good, He also loves and blesses them massively. Now people that don't believe in God are still His creation but He doesn't consider them His children until they believe in His Son. And if they don't believe in His Son during this limited time they can never be considered one of His Children.

So that is why God's children inherit the kingdom of God because they are His children. I mean that is how inheritance works does it not? You give your estate to your own family. The cool thing is everybody can inherit the Kingdom of God and eternal life they just have to choose to have faith and believe in Him. That is what it mean to be born again. You are reborn a child of God and therefor inherit the kingdom He has been working on all this time.

THAT IS A WISE STATEMENT. GOD USES THOSE THINGS IN THIS WORLD TO GIVE US EXAMPLES AND TO SIMPLIFY IT SO WE CAN UNDERSTAND. THEN QUESTIONS OF WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE FAMILIES NO EXAMPLES ECT. GOD HAS PLANS FOR EVERY INDIVIDUAL IT SAYS HE KNOWS HOW MANY STRANDS OF HAIR EACH PERSON HAS. SOMEONES LIFE COULD BE HORRIBLE FOR ALMOST A WHOLE LIFETIME JUST SO THAT THEY COULD POSSIBLY MEET ONE PERSON OR HAVE ONE SMALL MOMENT WHERE THEY GET THERE CHANCE TO EXCEPT HIM OR DENY HIM. I'VE SEEN IT IN MY OWN LIFE.

da memes... its da memes, i tell ya!!!

Why does every picture of "Jesus" show him as being a honky? I thought it was pretty much agreed upon by the religous folks that Jesus was a camel jockey?

Likening God to my father carries negative weight to me. My father hated me from the day I was born; threw me down the cellar stairs when I was 3; and treated me like shit for more than 50 years. He even tried to make sure I didnt get one penny of his estate; even though I had no childhood to speak of helping him build up his estate.

So if God is supposed to be like my father, it means he must have oozed up from hell; acted like a fucking prick during all his existence; and arranged things to fuck over his children after he left the earth and went back to hell to take over from Satan. He probably would have experienced orgasm watching his son die in agony on the cross if he were my father.

I wish I could travel back in time and have killed him about the time I was 2 years old (cet. par.), as he fucked over everyone he met -- unlike Will Rogers, my father never met a man he liked.

LET ME ASK YOU A QUESTION. THIS WOULD REFER TO MY LAST STATEMENT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD FUCKED UP LIVES. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO TREAT YOUR SON? MOST LIKELY JUST THE OPPOSITE OF YOUR FATHER DID TO THE SON OF YOURS LOVE AND A LIFE YOU NEVER HAD.

MY FATHER TOLD ME THAT HIS FATHER NEVER TOLD HIM THAT HE LOVED HIM AND THAT HE RARELY SHOWED LOVE SO HE MADE A PROMISE TO HIMSELF THAT EVERYDAY HE TOLD ALL HIS CHILDREN THAT HE LOVED THEM, MY FATHER WAS MY EXAMPLE TO SEE GOD AS A FATHER FIGURE MAYBE THATS WHAT MY DAD HAD TO GO THROUGH THAT FOR ME AND MY BROTHERS AND SISTER TO SHOW US HOW GOD WOULD BE AN EXAMPLE. MAYBE THATS WHY HE PUT YOU THROUGH ALL THAT HELL WITH YOUR FATHER SO YOU COULD SO UNCONDITIONAL LOVE TO YOUR KIDS AND BE THE SAME EXAMPLE MY FATHER WAS FOR ME, BUT THAT IS BETWEEN YOU AND GOD.

that is basically why I said what I did --- some people have a negative view of thier father. some times that is their fault other times it is not--anyway, I didnt really read any of the other posts before I posted

The only thing that I understand...is that I don't fully understand God at all

B True

what do you tjink about God?? for example i can think of so many evil people who have it all in life and so many good people who have nothing and die young etc. Why would anybody who was just and caring do that sort of thing?? just a thought
AND if God is so forgiving do some people go to hell when Jesus says you should forgive all wrongs?

That is exactly why I'm confused. If god is so forgiving of all things, why should we fear "judgement"?

Ok, and another question...... I, for argument sake, I was a prick all my life and did nothing but screw people over and commit sins..... and then on my death-bed "Accepted" god into my life and had faith for that last 10 minutes.... would I not be forgiven and "inherit gods kingdom”?

it mystifies me really all i know is like most people if there is a heaven i hope i go there

Man, it mystifies all of us. Just spend some time with the Bible and see if it makes sense to you.

God is all forgiving but he can not look upon sin. So since He did care about us and He can not look upon sin, He sent his son to pay for the sin we did in our lives. And to be forgiven all you have to do is believe Jesus(God's son) died for YOUR sins and believe He is your Lord and saviour and then repent from your old ways. Then you inherit the kingdom of God. And yes, according to what I believe you would be in Heaven. Maybe not in the best part of town but you would still make it. :D

Spruce, sorry for the experience you had with your father. That sux. But not all fathers are like that. And your Father in Heaven is definetely not like that.

Hunt, I see what you point was now.

I think someone should fear God for the same reason they have any other phobia. Like say you are afraid of frogs, the same works with God. You could just fear that he is gonna jump up on you and then slip down your collar, his cold, clammy, slippery and slimy skin sliding over your delicate skin, making you squirm and squeal as your run around waving your arms and smacking yourself.
Or perhaps you are afraid of large farm animals, like cows, and horses. The same goes for fearing the Lord. You might fear that some loud noise will spook God and he will come charging at you, blind with fear and trample you, kicking, and pushing you further into the dust until you can't breath and an oragan bursts from the pressure.
Or say you really can't stand heights. Just as with heights, the same could happen with Our Savior. You could just fall right off of him, tumbling over and over, shrieking in terror as you plummeted towards the hard earth below.
Perhaps you have a fear of spiders and insects. You should fear God the same way. He could climb up your body and bite you, causing excruciating searing pain to tear through you and cause you to convulse in agony, meanwhile he crawls over your body, eventually burrowing under your skin, and into your ears, eyes, mouth, nose and throat. Laying eggs and biting, over and over again until you lay there paralyzed with fear and the venom of your countless bites.

I think it is quite simple really - God is some scary shit.

I'm afraid of Llamas....... or really just that someone will find a way for humans and Llamas to communicate. :horny:

NOW THAT, I'M AFRAID OF!

The bible uses several words to describe God.
yehovah - self-Existent or Eternal
El Shaddai - the Almighty
Some others...
these all describe the nature of God.

God is Just, and cannot be unfair. His justice demands that disobedience against His laws be punished. Justice administers the penalty that right-eousness demands.

Psalm 19:9 ...the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

Psalm 50:6 ...for God is judge himself.

Psalm 58:11 ...verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

Rom. 3:26 To declare at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Heb. 10:30,31 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongs unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Heb. 12:23, 1 John 1:9, Rev. 15:3.

If you look at the bible exegetically, which I think you should, you can see throughout the old testament how God showed His nature to the people. A big underlying theme of the old testament is 'man is not good enough nor will they ever be good enough to commune with God, by himself). You have the ten commandments that set this bench mark and we see throughout the text that man CONTINUALLY fails in meeting these standards.

In essence, we fear Him much like we fear an institutional law giver. A court judge, for example. Because we established them to be able to reperesent societal law, uphold it, and judge accordingly. I don't fear a municipal judge for more than the laws I break.

Will a court judge appoint life in prison or death to his son if the son commits murder? Yes he will. Because he has to be just. Does he love him any less? NO!

Cool thing is it is documented that God is more than Just.

Ok, and another question...... I, for argument sake, I was a prick all my life and did nothing but screw people over and commit sins..... and then on my death-bed "Accepted" god into my life and had faith for that last 10 minutes.... would I not be forgiven and "inherit gods kingdom”?

Yup. Luke 23:39-43

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. "
Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
