I'm in Cali also. You can't buy Humalog, but you can buy Humilin R. Just walk in and say you need Humulin R. Act confident. If they ask you if you have a script say "no I'm from out of town and I ran out". If they press you further, just act non chalant and say "is this a problem?". Remember that you're not asking for winstrol. You can't get in trouble asking for insulin.
