If I were in your shoes I'd buy a pistol of an appropriate defense caliber AND a companion pistol of a similar (or same) make in .22 caliber.

Shoot them both often of course, but you will find you can afford to practice with the .22 much, much more frequently.


Knowing what I know now, I'd start with a good pair of smith revolvers, same frame, similarly outfited, one in .357 mag (you can shoot both .38 special, loaded as hot as you want and .357 mag) and the other in .22. There are many models to choose from and everyone develops their personal preference.
