hi guys, im gonna break it up with my gf of 4 months. shes a really nice person and shes pretty cute, but shes also 9yrs older than me. the age factor keeps bothering me and im so used to dating girls younger /the same age that i simply cannot get around the fact that shes so much older. shes got a nice place, car, good job, her degree..and im just a starving college kid. and i want to start dating young girls again. so im gonna call it off- thru email, so tell me what you think of this letter:

Hey there, I hope that you are doing well. As you know I am currently in Shanghai, and will be traveling throughout Asia till September. I am writing this email after much thought and deliberation, and believe me, I thought it over very much. I feel that it is not fair for you to wait for me to return from vacation without seeing other people. I also feel that I may hold you back in some way froms achieving your long term goals- goals that do not pertain to 20year old college students with crappy part time jobs. I understand that this is key moment in your life in which you are focusing on your career, family, and your future- all of which I cannot help you with. You are an amazing person with a great personality, and you deserve only the best. You deserve someone with a stable career, a degree and the same desire to begin a family. I trust that you will have no problem finding that person. Regardless, I would like to say that the last four months spent with you were truely memorable, and I will definately miss your companionship. You are a beautiful person, inside and out, and I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors.

Actually - he only dated her for 4 months. It's not like they were engaged. A phone call *might* be better but under the circumstances, I dont see much wrong here.

Matter of fact, I think he is actually very sweet about the whole thing.

Darling,

I disagree with the entire letter. Tell her the truth. 20 yo's are capable of that. It will help her a lot more than a letter that reads like she is being dismissed from duty. Re-write thoughtfully with what is in your heart and send it to us. You will come accross as an a-hole, but that too will help her get over you. And chances are that if she wants something serious soon, she was not planning on having it with you.
 
Be a man and tell her in person. Email breakup? Have some class.
 
just say all that stuff over the phone. She will appreciate it better, and you might be able to remain friends. I had to do it ; you can do it!!!
 
People that are nice to spare feelings piss me off.

I'm not saying to be a complete asshole and emphasize only the negative, but don't pussy foot around the real reason. it has nothign to do with her and what she wants. it's what you want, so don't project this whole "you deserve someone with a stable job etc" crap onto her.

if a girl really is a good person but there's no chemistry, then say just that, or whatever the real reason is. no reason to kiss someone's ass to soften the blow

He is in CHINA on vacation. Where is she? I dont think that a long drawn out and most likely awkward conversatin that will cost a fortune is warranted. And why should he wait till he gets back? Let her be cut loose and SHE can move on.

Not to mention - the only dated for FOUR MONTHS so I don't think it was all that serious. I really dont think a phone call is warranted and the email was totally acceptable as is... he is right. HE AINT what she wants or needs - he is younger and cant (nor does he WANT to) provide her with the stabilty (I am sure she indicated to him) that she would like.

The dude isn't doing a thing wrong IMHO.

But then again, my opinions are like everybody's asshole..... ain't it? :lmao:

Can you imagine the chunk of change for that call? If the relationship is over there is NO WAY I would consider the monetary investment, especially if I were a poor college student.

And yes, I realize how close two people can get in a short period of time as I did marry my Old Grump on our third date. However, that does not seem to be the case here. If I am off the mark then Yarq can correct me.

Though I was single for 6 years before I remarried, I honestly don't recall too many breakups... then again, I didn't have too many even remotely serious relationships so there isn't much to recall. One guy who did fuck with my head DID break up with an email... Shocked the shit out of me ,however, the circumstances were very different. We were verbally engaged and very committed - though no ring was yet bought, he courted me and my children very seriously and then just *"BAM* sent an email saying we were done because I returned an expensive gift when he REALLY hurt my feelings. Needless to say - the dude was bipolar and also had some VERY serious issues that neither I nor my kids would need. He did me a HYUGE favor breaking up with me....

Of course, every 5/6 months or so he still sends me his perfunctory *feeler dirty email* to see if I am still braindead. :rolleyes:

Why lie? The letter sounds crap and full of bs to be honest. She'll never know the real reason if you send taht and may even be left feeling insecure because of that.

Just say you aren't comfortable with the way things are because of the age gap, wanting to see other women etc. You never know she may understand and perhaps even cause you to change your mind.
