What do you bros think?'

My son is 13 next month and has shown an interest in learning how to box. I'm ok with it as long as I don't envision someone pounding his face in. I mean, he played 3 yrs of tackle football.

Well I'm taking him today to a local martial arts academy that does boxing, kickboxing, and all that other jazz, He's really only interested in boxing so he'll do an introductory boxing class today and see if he wants to sign up.

bad idea?

Great idea. Builds confidence and keeps him in shape.

great idea. it's supervised, disciplined, great exercise and will expose him to other martial arts.
If he's interested, you should absolutely support him.

Take em to a real club. I boxed thru middle school and high school at a boxing club where it was serious and had two pro fighters. You wont learn much at an 'academy' too many people not hands on. 13 is a great age to start it will teach him discipline and feeling of accomplishment. It won't be easy they will work you and he will spar by 14.

right...I just see brain injury (but then thats most sports anyway)..but everyone else makes good points

I did some amateur boxing in highschool, and it did me a ton of good. I trained in a shitty gym with some good guys though, one was a pro mma fighter and he would teach classes. boxing classes were absolutely brutal, one of the hardest forms of cardio i've ever done. And yeah he'll get the air knocked out of him, some black eyes, and possibly some cauliflower ear but i think brain damage is far far down the road.

assuming that this is a reputable establishment? nope...great idea...this world is a real shitty place and, if all he learns is a little bit about defending himself and the confidence to exercise that knowledge when he needs to, it will be time/money well spent...he's a dude...a dude should know how to fight.
