Box Squats on 5x5?

Guys, I was wondering what you all thought of subbing box squats for oly squats on 5x5? I am interested in doing this for less soreness and increased recovery time. I have to run 20 miles per week and with two squat and one DL day, I am wondering how much abuse my legs would be able to handle. I am not going to be rotating heights, just using a below parallel box.

I REALLY do not think you will have any problem with soreness or recovery time once adjusting to squatting three times a week.

Give it a week or two, u'll be fine. There is no reason to believe that box squats will give you superior recovery time or minimize soreness.

box squats will be more intense once you learn to use your ass and hams as you'll be moving bigger weights and loading the PC more than the quads.. which takes longer to recover.

why not just alternate between the two depending on your fatigue levels

All good advice. I guess squats would only be two days per week with deads on one day. The only way I will know as far as recovery and soreness is to just jump into the fire.

Should I just push through the soreness running and wait for the adaptation to take place?

If you are doing madcow 5x5 you also have a light squatting day on wednesday before deads.

You're gonna be fine, either kind of squats you do. Like tweak said, mix up the styles if you want to.

As for the running 20 miles a day, it's really not ALL that much if you're getting in the required calories... the adaption will take place. Push through.

If I ran 20 miles per day, I would be asking how I can place in the top 5 in the next major marathon. It's 20 per week and you're probably right. Not all that much really.

I run about 20mi per week and have been squatting 2x and deadlifting 2x per week. I found it really helps with the soreness and stiffness when I have it. Sometimes it is more of a jog/walk though, as I have to allow my puppies to keep up. Just eat enough and listen to your body. Better to hit it hard in the gym and back off running than to hit the gym light and run hard, IMO.

if you wanna look like a marathon runner, than focus on your running. They are a little too scrawny and weak for me though :D, rather be a fat powerlifter any day.
