How much do you box squat compared to your ass-to-the-grass squat?

For me it's around 80%

It's individual to each person. Some have a huge carryover while others don't.

I thought one of the points of box squats was to get your body use to handling more weight so that when you go back full squat you can do more.

I never finished reading the article too tired ill do it tomorrow, but thats all i got too use at my gym and also ive read other articles where they use very low boxes and parallel and above parallel boxes so..................

If the box #'s are way ahead of your free squat - are you sitting back and pausing on the box or using it as a depth marker to tap & blast?

12" is the absolute lowest I would ever go with a box, which works out at about 2" below paralle.. and then never using more than 80% load as there's too much stretch on the hamstrings for me to go heavy at that depth

Funny you should ask - I was sitting back more and unloading the weight a bit last night. I was not able to use as much as before. Still pretty close -about 90% - but definitely a difference.

question is...how the hell do you get down to 4-5 inches? even my ATF squat isnt that low.

First of all i dident realize its a little taller than i though i measured it and its 6", but thats only 1" more and its not hard at all however im also 5' 8"

I sit back and pause and on my first one i actually start off the box. I put the bars down real low and sit on the box and bend my back and get under it to take it off. However i also only do this on DE day i would never try it on ME day like this because my problem on the squat in the first place is my lower back and abs which really makes no sense because i can dead a lot more than i can squat.

not sure your height makes a difference.

Majutsu posted this awhile ago- "when I make my boxes for folks, I measure from the floor to the top of the kneecap, the shin length. Then I measure the fattest thigh diameter I can find, up near the hip crease, the thigh thickness. Box height = shin length - thigh thickness."

I think we were all wondering if your box is around 13-15 inches in height. If you made a box and it was only 4-6" high....well you might as well not even have a box there unless your ass is hitting your ankles....

You know? :)

The box is made to do deadlifts off of and my ass does hit my calfs, well it would but i spread my legs out to almost hit the sides of the cage.

do u completely sit back on the box or do u just touch it? can anyone provide me with a comprehensive link about box squats? any help would be much appreciated..

Completely sit back, release the hip flexors and stand back up. If you suck at staying tight or need to help develop core strength, take ~3 second pause while on the box, this will make sure your ass feels it the next two days....

Feel free to rip me
I generally do pl squats only...

I started doing atf after reading some threads here.
So when people do ATF , people are not lowering the weight, standing at a narrow width, and making thier hamstrings touch thier calves?

If so my behind is 2-3 inches off the ground and not 4 even when I was like 250 lbs

not sure of a correlation between a box squat weight, and free squat weight. but i do know that if my box squat 1rm goes up, my reg. squat follows proportionally.

The actual depth seems to vary a lot from person to person, probably depending on the amount of body mass in the way and flexibility. So long as hamstrings and calves make a good, solid contact, it's an ATF squat in my book.

When you see pictures of Olympic lifters at their deepest, though, their hamstrings are often lower than their calves. Their foot spacing is often fairly wide too but not as wide as many powerlifters take theirs.

I did 8 x 3 off a 12" box yesterday and it was brutal.. if my injuries had allowed me to Oy squat the same weight I was using, pain free, to that depth it would have barely been a warmup, but sitting to the low box was rough. Amazing the difference a couple of inches makes :)

Yes with a wide stance your behind would not touch your calves , but I would also think there would be alot of pressure on your knees because they would be torqued quite a bit in that position. Plus the weight on your back would force you down further thus increasing torque on your knees

Mine is about 85%. Box Sqaut is around 380 right now. (Based on 3rep max of 340lb.. Usaully your 3rm represents 90% your 1rm). I'm 6'2" my box is about 16" high. Maybe 1-2" below my parallel. I'm going to vid tape my box squat soon maybe post it.

My comp squat is about 440 right now havent tested in awhile. But that is a very close estimate.

get a 3" foam pad, drop your box height by 1", and add the foam pad to your box. have fun. its gonna kick your ass. well, it did mine.
