Box squat danger?

Madd Hatter

New member
Yesterday in the gym I had a guy approach me and warn me about doing box squats. He said you risk cracking your S#^%*(&#@^%? (around your bottom vertebrae), particularly as you get older. He said it's the same injury people get when they slip and fall on their ass on the ice. Anyone know what he's talking about, and do I need to worry about it? I've just started doing these, and was probably only gonna do em for a couple months, then I just won't do them again if it's risky.

It was really weird, this guy didn't look built at all, but he was doing the Frank Zane Leg Blaster and Leg Press with as many 45s as he could fit on the things, wtf.

Just don't rock back when you're sitting on the box. Sit down and back at the same time, unflex the hips, then immediately flex them again. Don't spend much time on the box.

If you do them worng, of course they're dangerous. Otherwise, you're at about as much risk of cracking your ass box squatting as he is sitting in a chair. In fact, when I box squat, my tailbone doesn't even touch the box. You should be sitting on your nuts.

Exactly,

If you keep the movement controlled and use good technque. . its safe.

The danger comes when literally crashing down on to the box and rolling the back forward.

i had someone at the gym tell me that box squats are bad for the knees. he said that he used to squat so low that his gluts touched the back of his calves??

i didn't pay much attention to his "advice" since i assumed his knee damage wasn't from properly done box squats.

Actually, box squatting should be pretty easy on the knees if you do it right. Seems like there's a recurring theme here, lol.

since ive begun squatting heavier my knees have gotten a lot better, no more pain. Aalthough now that i think about it, my former knee pain could have been from growing so much, anyone ever grow 5 inches in under a year??
