bors, How many times can you bench 225?

Well, I'm going to be honest here and admit that I CAN'T GET 225 UP ONCE ON THE FLAT BENCH!

My best is 190 for one at 178 lbs. My chest has always been weak, it's my hardest body part to gain on. But hell, a year ago my max was 145 for one so it's improving, just not quickly enough.

Work on improving your back / tri / shoulder work first. Half of a big bench comes from this work.

It all adds up. Just got to be patient. And keep training hard!

I’ll tell you what worked for me. I’ve been lifting seriously for over three years now. For a year I lifted each body part once per week and trained every body part including calfs, biceps and triceps. I gained some strength but not much, I kept hitting the wall. I tried HST for four months but really didn’t progress much on it.

Then about 8 months ago I changed my routine completely. I now lift only heavy compound movements like bench, bar rows, deads, squat, chins, dips, mil press, and crunches. I started with a weight for each exercise that I could put up fairly easy for 2 sets of 8 and I’ve simply added small increments of weight each week. No isolation work at all. It seems to be working. It’s not a fast way to high poundages, but oh well I’m in for the long haul anyway.

I also have low test levels. Gear would help me IMMENSELY but I prefer not to go that route. I also overtrain very easily so I have to keep the volume low. I think I got the shit end of the stick when it comes to genetics. To be honest, I kind of like the challenge though; if I gained like a weed with little effort then this iron game would kind of lose it’s appeal for me.

What he said.

I think the most I've ever done was a triple with 225...never tried to do more. That was at about 190-195 or so.

My bench is way off lately, so I dunno what I could do now.
