Body fat %

Tonight, at my gym, it was "Body composition men" night.
To make it short, they were checking bofy % fat for free.
Of course I went for it...and I got to know I have 17% body fat :(
But the surprise came when I was told that my percentage is between excellent and good!
According to their values, a man between 30-34 y.o. is in the category "excellent" if with body fat equal to 14.5% and "good" if with body fat equal to 18%!
Does this sound right to you all!?
I'm 30 y.o. 6' 200# and with 17% of body fat I do not feel comfortable at all!
What do you think?

What's up bro? Did they use those calipers? If they did, I got some bad news for you bro. Those things are totally inaccurate. Check with your doctor if you want it done right.

screw going to your doc for this. only true way for a body fat reading is by water displacement.

Thanks bro for your reply.
What would a good percetage of b.f. be for me?
Consider I'm 200# 6' 30y.o.

Thanks man

a "good" bodyfat % would mostly rely on you. You trying to add weight on? stay slim and fit (men's fitness look)? getting ready for a competition?

I feel that unless you are overconcerned with you bf and feel you need to lose weight, then cut down. This can be done by changing your eating habits alone to just healthy with some lifting too. yet others still feel the need for cardio.

Take me for example, ff you would go by my age and height along with my weight, bf NOT include, and look on these basic health charts, I am listed just about in severly overweight. My goal right now is to put on some serious mass in which extra fat is almost guaranteed.

Until i start to compete, the only thing about my bf that concerns me is that I'm not putting an abundance of fat in my midsection with my usage of slin.

As long as you look good and feel good, there is no need to worry.

hey bro

don't let the body fat test get to you.Frist off they take it from a wide span and put it on paper then everyone who falls in that range thats what they are bull shit .everyone is genticly differnt and that rule do'es not apply to anabolics. If you want it right on the money you have to get a water fat test and your doc can send you to one.I think Its cheaper if you get a doc to write you a referal.than to do a walk in.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (the leader in exercise testing and prescription), for men:

30-39 <12% Excellent
11-13 Good
14-20 Average
21-23 Fair
>23 Poor

Hope that helps.

If done correctly and consistently by the same person, the calipers are usually within +/- 3 %. That's actually pretty good compared to the other tests that are out there.

Actually, I'd vote for dual x-ray absorptiometry with hydrostatic weighing in second. Calipers placing 3rd. Most others appear to be a waste of time.
