Biking Trip

BOOEY

Banned
I'll be going on a biking tour soon, 5+hours. I was wondering what would be the best thing to take, besides water? Keeping my muscles from catabolizing is first priority.

No. Afterwards, definitely yes on the protein. Before it maybe try to carb load (night before, 3 banannas an hour and a half before). During, I'd avoid eating any carb/protein/fat because it will throw off your heart rate. If you need to eat during (and you may), I suggest some plums because they have an incredibly low glycemic level.

More important than the food is the hydration, trust me. When you wake up that morning, your urine needs to be clear. It needs to be clear the day before and leading up to the race. Drink lots of water.

Before the race, do a quart with Ultima in it. During do ultima.

After it, do a protein shake and an ultima with 50g of dextrose mixed in.

Depending on the heat you need to be killing at least two 22oz bottles an hour, maybe three. You also need carbs on rides over 2 hours so if they have feed stations with fruit, bars and such dig in. You might even want to superhydrate using glycerol before the race.

Doh, something I forgot. If you want to get some good carbs on the road, look into gel packs. Really ideal for on the go.

I really want to do the AIDS ride from SF to LA.....585 miles over 7 days. I'd have to bust a gut to get ready for that one.

gel packs are def the way to go, the bars take too much water to get down

Agreed, gel is the best. I had the great idea last year during a race to try and get a few bites of a powerbar in the transaition area. One bite and I chewed it for about the first 5 minutes fo the bike leg. Never again!
