BF % Estimate

danbo said:
I was actually after the opinions of member of this forum, these opinions are more likely to be accurate that a BF calculator, which is probably inaccurate.
dude, if you read the thread, then you'll know that is *probably* quite accurate... yes i can read that you're after opinions... just thought i'd provide a different perspective as well. ok, to answer the original question, its actually quite hard for me to judge... but i'm going to say somewhere in the mid teens.
mesco, you'll have to copy the link and paste it in your address bar.

I'd say i'm in the 'Hard' category then. My body fat calipers tell me i'm at 11.5% but i dont match any of the 'cut' pictures, i still have a bit of a gut, but hardly any fat anywhere else.

Is it possible just to have fat gathering in one area and therefore your bodyfat seems higher than it is?

These calculators are pretty accurate..I did this while back..it put me at 16 and when I actually got it done It was at about 15.6% so they are on...a wise man once told me (SGT) Use a mirror!

i really don't know much about testing with callipers, but i believe that a little experience is required to get a more accurate reading. having said that, the callipers tend to give a lower reading, something like 3-4%. i strongly suggest putting in your numbers into that online calc that i posted earlier... some ppl have been pretty satisfied with the readings... and anyway, you've got nothing to lose.

It gives two readings, which one should i take?

Edit: Ok i have just used the BF calculator
Estimate #1 based on height and weight
Your "Ponderal Index" is 13.12 which gives an estimated body fat of 11.1% (16.2 pounds of fat)

Estimate #2 based on waist size and weight
Estimated body fat of 12.6% (18.3 pounds of fat)
The first figure is 0.6 above what my calipers read, and the 2nd figure is 2.1 above my calipers reading, so i guess my calipers are reading slightly low, but fairly accurate though.

I am considering getting the electronic calipers from AccuFitness, they are supposed to be 'very' accurate.

the second one is accurate, at least for me at 5'10" 223. what are the 2 readings?
See above.

Edit: None of these calculations seem to consider muscle mass or water weight though. I suppose if you want a spot on BF % you need to get it measured using the tank of water method, if you know the one i mean?

yes.
actually the second one is more accurate when considering muscle mass. with the first one i'd be a fat slob, but the second one is more accurate and only shows me to be a slob :o

Yeah, ok. That is a ball park estimate.

Spend 10-20 bucks (euro, whatever) and have a 7 point caliper done. The only saving grace you have is that thinner people can have a lower body fat due to lack of mass.

Eh. I expected a bit more rudeness when it comes to INSANE EXTREME HARDCORE BODYFAT TESTING!!!!! I F'ING KILLLLLL those calipers each and EVRY tIm3!!!

Sorry if this sounds like a very stupid question, but when measuring the waist where exactly do you measure? On the site coolcolj posted it says 1 inch above the naval, but on other sites I have seen it says at naval level or lower. What is the generally accepted place to measure the waist at?

Thanks in advance ;)

Your saying i'm a fat git? lol.

My calipers also say that i'm 11.5% body fat. I wonder if thats accurate, i measured it in the right place.

Could it also be that because i don't have much muscle i might not look like i have such a low BF %, but i might actually be at that BF %?
