Benching more weight with db's than with bb's

Got a friend and it's kinda strange, he can db bench more than he can bench with the barbell. What do you think would be his sticking point, or if there is anything he can do to change this?

i know that some people bench with their palms facing them, so the DBs are parallel to their body as opposed to perpindicular

that's what im thinking is going on here

Like jeremys said , DB's parallel with your body is much easier then DB's held with your palms away from your face.

My first guess was that he's using a shorter range of motion with the db's. Place an imaginery line between the the two db's and watch to see if it's in the neighborhood of touching his chest. I've seen many lifters cut these about 3 or 4 inches too short.

i used to be the same way. i db pressed all the time, was doin 120s, never cared for the bb. couple months ago, tried the bb and was surprised at how little i could do. stuck with it for a few months, now rollin with the big boys.

If you can do 120's with dbells, but can't bench the same....I dunno, that's just sad, and I still can't see how it is possible. I'd go with pwr machines theory though, that he probably has a range of motion with dbells that consists of about 5 inches from lockout, to the point when he is pressing. I see tons of guys doing that. They don't do the same on bench in my opinion, because it looks more obvious that they are cheating, as everyone knows you go to chest on a classic bench. Let me guess, your friend screams alot, and slams the dbells as well. I hate guys like that. Why is it that every gym has at least one though?!

hah even though i dislike you, i also hate guys like that. i saw a 155lb guy doing DB presses with 35's and he was screeming like he had a fuckin hurnia. i looked at him and said "what was that? did you say something?" and he shut up after that.

You sure do speak your opinions, don't you ...

Instead of saying some asshole thing like that, man, why not give some advice, or some positive input?

Hahaha. Classic.

hey atomic F@G, who the hell are you?

first off, its proven that db presses recruit more muscle fibers than bb bench. ill back that up if you want. second, you ever try an exercise for the first time? not easy huh? but the longer you stick with it, the easier it becomes. cant exepct for someone who has done db's all his life, to automatically go and do 365+ his first shot.

so shut your mouth unless you have sumthin constructive to say. get off my d!ck

I can do more on DBs, but that's all because i have a weak rotator that seems to bother me more on BB than DBs

I don't remember seeing this much drama in the training forum... not before?

And sorry... but if I failout on 120, 130's, or higher on incline DB's... I'm might get a litte loud... and the DB's might just hit the ground. You also might hear me get loud on deads, bar rows, squats, military press or any other larger lift, for that matter... it's just part of the experience...

First off, quit being so damn sensitive. Second, I was simply agreeing with what Pwr Machine suggested. Go cry to him. Third, the guys' initial post deals with his FRIEND, not him, so it aint like I was telling him that HE was sad. I guess his friend who isn't even going to read this thread, might get telepathicly offended in your world though, right?? Christ man, the guy asked for opinions & comments as to why his friend could do more with dbells than bench, so I gave him mine. So the answer to your hypothetical is, "yes", I do speak my opinions. That's what people usually want when they ask for them. I'm sorry that mine send you running for the Kleenex box for some reason.

I wasn't even directing that response to you, you moron. Did you see me quoting your silly ass? That's usually what one does when they are addressing a person directly on a BB Board. Like now for instance!

Haha, i never thought that such a simple question would lead to so much drama....

Anyways, i took a look at his form during db presses and it was impeccable. Personally im just guessing that his triceps are doing most of the work since he is always pressing them till they touch each other at the top. Since normal bb benching keeps the hands apart at the top of the motion, he's probably using more chest than he's used to, but once he gets the hang of it he should be fine. I think more often that not he just gets scared of dropping the bar on his neck, so i told him either to get a spot or go in a power rack with the safety bars just above his chest till he gets used to it.

His right rotator is probably an issue too with the wider grip since he hurt it pretty bad a year ago, and it never really healed correctly.

:D

I don't know about benching more with the DB's than the BB's. I stopped doing BB Benches because I didn't feel or get anything from them. Maybe, becuase of my long arms(6'4"). But as soon as I started doing DB's, my chest development took off. I can stretch & squeeze alot better.

This thread is funny. I agree... speaking ones own opinions is great... I think everyone should do it if they feel the need.

But something about the weight room that has always got me is that one should worry about oneself rather than others (unless you are a trainer and wish to give some constructive critique) -- Just go in, do your thing... let someone else do theirs...

IMHO, you should be focusing on your own workouts than worrying about someone else.
