Being BIG or being skilled???

Hey bros, I have lifted weight most of my life so that I could be big and strong and nobody could mess with me. Do you guys feel (as martial artists) that you could even beat up someone who has 25 pounds of muscle on you (street fight). And how long do you have to train to be able to do something like this? I was considering takeing boxing or one of the arts up so I have a little more then just muscle. But not sure because how many people out there are trained to be able to beat some big strong ass dudes.

absolutely.. No doubt... My best friend is just a naturally tough kid, he looks like a doughboy but he has kicked the arse of many a freak in his day... He looks forward to it.... his favorite line is "how does it feel to have wasted a lifetime in the gym" after he is standing over some dude with 21 inch guns who is bleeding all over and missing teeth... He is a kickboxer but was a brawler before training... I outweight my sifu by 50 pounds and he would knock me out in less than a minute...

Really, Im talking about a street fight. Couldn't someone bigger just tackle/bring to the floor someone who is of light weight and use there weight to there advantage.

It all depends on what the bigger guy knows. My instructor is 6'0 260 pounds and has a 51 inch chest he is freaking huge. He can put it on anybody in a minute. I fight him all the time and it's great. If the bigger guy has some training you'll have a very hard time.

it basically comes down to skill, id put my money on a small guy like mark hominick who is a super lightweight in tko against any untrained piece of meat you can put out their. if the big guy was trained, well it would be different

size helps a lot if skill levels are equal
but really it dosn't take much skill at all to kick someone in the nuts
I think being big and skilled is a good combination!
I am big, I am working on getting skilled

What do you mean by training?? Do you mean years of training, or hitting the bag a lot, wrestling with friends and getting into street fights often

Not necessarily. Imagine a fight in your head. When the big goes and tries to put all his weight on the smaller guy, you think the smaller guy is just going to let him? This is where fighting ability comes into play. If the smaller guy is a trained fighter, then he'll be able to take care of someone charging him. Now, as mentioned above, if the bigger guy is also a skilled fighter, well that's a different story altogether.

Isn't punch strength relative to your strength/weight/speed..... I mean yea you might miss but wouldnt it be an easy KO if u weighed 30 pounds more

a good striker regardless of weight should be able to control the distance or just KO or cause enough damage/pain to someone before getting hurt (boxers/Thai/TMA)

a grappler who is skilled but smaller would probably be very happy when the big guy tries to close the distance. most big guys will make the mistake of charging/closing the distance against someone small without protecting themselves properly.

in grappling tournaments it is not uncommon for someone who is outweighed by 20-30-40 lbs to beat a SKILLED/TRAINED fighter if he has the right skill/strategy.

thats why i kinda laf at guys in the gym who lift to be tough and fight.. it really doesnt translate over to fighting at all IMO

if you want to learn to defend yourself go find a good teach and get on the mat.
