Behind-the-neck Presses...worth it???

In my current push/pull split routine I do standing military presses (more of a push press) on Mondays, and standing behind-the-neck presses on Thursdays. I have read several articles that state behind-the-neck presses should be avoided because of safety concerns, but I was wondering if this particular version was beneficial when done safely and correctly?

In other words, if I'm doing the front presses one day, is there any need or extra benefit of doing the behind-the-neck style? I personally feel like the front version hammers on my front delts whereas the behind-the-neck presses hit more on my triceps, traps, and rear delts, but if the only thing gained out of behind-the-neck presses is a torn rotator cuff than I'll ditch them...

Behind the neck presses put the shoulder in a vulnerable position. Adding weight to this can lead to torn rotators, cartiledge damage, and muscle injuries. Plus I don't feel that pressing overhead twice a week will be very beneficial actualy more of a detriment to strength gains.

Cheers,
Scotsman

yeah what scotsman said, they are really bad for your shoulders. i know several guys who screwed themselves up badly doing them.

Behind the neck push press or jerk are good dependign on your goals but strict pressing from that position can definitely put some undue stress on the shoulders...

my delts are as good as they get and i NEVER do injurious behind the neck press.

i alternate weekly w/ seated smith machine press \ seated dumbbell press

i always finish with laterals ( light weight- very strict form )
