Battling Blisters

It never fails. Every single pair of running/cross training shoes I have ever owned has given me blisters. Even in high school when I ran track, I always had blisters. Is there anything I can do to keep them from coming up? Today I was doing cardio, and I felt a blister in the making and I almost wanted to stop running. It's just so annoying! The blisters are always on the inside of my foot, between the big toe and the arch. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. ;)

My personal suggestions ... bear in mind, I'm not a runner:

1. Never buy shoes other than the evening when you've spent a decent amount of time on your feet through the day.

2. There is no such thing as breaking a shoe in. A shoe should feel utterly perfect on your foot the minute you put it on. There should be no slippage, nothing should feel like it's not enough or too much. No side to side wiggling, no floatiness ...

3. GOOD SOCKS! Thorlos. Invest!

4. Go to a store that caters TO runners, have your gait analyzed, buy shoes accordingly.

5. Use an antiperspirant on your feet after you shower, after drying your feet.

These are suggestions from a person who is a difficult fit, and has a few foot problems, runners will probably help you further.

Shoes never quite fit me right, either. I have actually never had a shoe where my foot didn't slip inside.. except for flip flops, but that's not gonna cut it. hehe. I will definitely keep all of your suggestions in mind. I will try out the foot antiperspirant trick tomorrow morning. I'm going to keep an eye out for Thorlos as well. My socks are pretty run down and ragged.

I don't get so much blisters as callouses from just about all my shoes. I use orthodics to help counter bunions (already had the surgery, the orthodics are custom from my doc), but I still manage to get them. I own about 9 prs of shoes and put in new insoles (cut to fit the orthodics) about every 3 months at least. (Keepign in mind I rotate between at least 3 prs of shoes in any given week).

Heavy sox like Thorlos are a godsend. I was sort of interested in those custom Nikes you can have made. That might be an interesting experiment ($$$ tho). Also do you need custom orthodics? That might be something to explore as well.

That is something I have never thought of, Sassy! I don't know if anything custom would be in my budget. lol!

I'm wearing two pairs of socks this morning, and I tried the antiperspirant thing. We'll see how this goes. My shoes actually feel like they fit when I wear two pairs of socks, though! hehe.. darn narrow feet!

Yep that could be a part of your problem - I have narrow heels so only part of my foot slips. I didn't realize that. Maybe the orthodics won't do you much. There are places online that will make them or check your phone book or even talk to a local orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist if there are any places that will make them. Mine were $300 custom jobs. I had them made in 1991 and I still use them every day. I know there are places that will make rubber ones (or somethign that isn't' rigid and won't last as long but they are much cheaper - you could at least look).
