What is a respectable weight to be lifting for 6-8 reps for someone who has been training hard for a little less than a year? I was thinking at least 170

A respectable weight is anything that is heavy to you. Compare yourself only to yourself. I mean, what my training partners lift is off the charts.....if I compared my weights to theirs I would be pretty depressed.

Whatever weight you are doing, if you are straining, that's pretty respectable.

There are so MANY variables that can determine a person's starting strength in weight lifting. It varies so much from one person to the next, that there really is no standard guideline. Body structure, tendon strength, mind muscle connection, are just a few. Aslong as you are pushing yourself hard, the results will come, and what you are lifting now is only temporary. 170 for 6-8 reps is alot stronger then I was after less then a year training, but it took me long since I started at around 105lbs bodyweight. Just KEEP KILLING THAT SHIT!!

very good point..heavy is relative!!
my goal is to continuodly lift heavier weights whether its 2 lbs heavier than last week or whatever...point is im never happy with my weights i have goals but the idea is to break them and set higher ones..keep plugging away and never sacrifice form fr weight!!

Unless your powerlifting worrying about how much weight you are pressing is worthless.

As long as you use a weight where you fail around 6-8 reps, then you are training effectively, and therefore would get as much respect from me as someone you could press more. We go to the gym for our muscles, not our egos.

There are no respectable weights. What's respectable is showing up and getting the job done.

Take it from an old-timer, do NOT fall into the trap of comparing your weights, yourself to what other guys lift. It's dead end. There will always be someone bigger and stronger. You only hurt yourself by thinking in those terms.

theres no powrlifitng event for military presses!!

yeah, that's pretty good I think- I am about 180 and use 135 on my last/third set and get about 6 reps- partner makes me do 2 more to get 8. So- that's good to me, plus like they said above... If your going to failure at a weight- it's good.

sorry, thats not what I meant... I simply meant being solely concerned with improving the lift, not so much with gains other then strength.

sorry for the confusion.

Definitely good advice being given. Just yesterday believe it or not I was writing down my goals for how much weight I want to lift by Christmass 2005 when I realized that you really can't tell how much you will be lifting in the future as the body doesn't progress linearly. So, I trashed my goals and I'll just concentrate on the here and now as far as my training is concerned. Fuck worrying about what you'll lift in a year or whatever. Concentrate on getting stronger and bigger every workout and one day pressing 170 will be a warmup set.

Destroy that shizzle my nizzle HAHA!
