What is wrong with the disk? Is it bulging, ruptured, herniated or is it dessicated with an annular tear? The best thing to do is consult a doctor and let him give you some anti-inflammatory. With a little rest and the meds you should be ok. It usually takes 4-8 weeks for disks to heal. If the disk is torn and dessicated it will more than likely give you problems for a long time. With a dessicated disk it means that the disk is drying out or has dried out (the fluid is the disk that provides shock absorbancy is gone). The disk loses it's height and can cause pressure to be applied to nerves. If it is lumbar spine than pain is usually felt in the buttocks and legs, if it is in the cervical spine than pain can be felt in the shoulders and arms. Annular tears can heal but will never be the same and are more than likely going to tear again. Just take it easy for a while and do excercises that will build up and strengthen the core muscles that are around these disks. If surgery is recommended by a doctor than always seek a second opinion. I hope this helps.
