I'm doing a 4x4 tumbled limestone back splash in my kitchen...which do you think looks better, horizontal, or diagonal? Any other designs that don't look too gawdy?

I'll post before/after pics when I'm done.

useless without pics of your kitchen layout & surrounding features.

diagonal is more difficult to set.

You doing the work yourself?

I have set 160 4X4 ceramic tiles for my parents within the past 2 days. I love this stuff!

Did you go diagonal or horizontal? Let me see if I can dig up a pic. I just got done with the first coat of paint...gonna throw on a second coat tomorrow and do the bay window. Light oak blinds and moldings are on the way.

Oh yeah, how did you go about bringing the outlets out farther? Did you get the extended boxes like the ones used for new drywall?

Heres a couple of before pics.

horizontal.

I never thought about the new boxes as a solution, but with older houses it may not be the way to go because I have found that each outlet needs to come out different lengths.

I bought longer screws (1 5/8") and added plastic washers/spacers behind the outlet until it was flush. That is what's recommended at least.

My only problem is that I forget what size screws the outlet receptacles take. 3/32 ? 5/32? Crap I can't remember.

I think they are 10/32's but thats just a wild stab. I'll lay a pitch gauge on one if I can find the damn thing.

Hmm, I think either way would look nice.

Perhaps someone with a better eye like Velvett or Stilleto will chime in.

of course, i disagree with aap.
diagonal is a more sophisticated look. Your cabinets are not.. sophisticated enough to pull of horizontal without bringing down the look of your kitchen.

(i hope you weren't offended by that- it wasn't meant to be anything but helpful and explanative).

Not offended at all (bitch).

I think you are right though...that's actually why I haven't bought any of the hardware for the cabinets yet...I need to wait and see what fits the room as a whole. I think I like the horizontal better too.

How are you disagreeing with me? I never said one particular way.

Besides, I gave you pre-credit praises in the post above yours.

You need to be nicer to me

and you can start by getting on your hands and knees.

lol

the horizontal or vertical for 4X4 tiles is the equivalant of killahbee's 5X5 circular window.

horizontal..

a. this is what i was disagreeing with.

b. although, i didn't see your post above mine where you recognize that i have much better taste than you.

c. and that I taste better than you in general

d. show me your penis again. thanks.

Oh. That was me replying to Jack asking which way I set the tiles at my parents house.

Perhaps it wasn't clear to you simpletons.

Let's make out.

not horizontal- DIAGONAL.
diamond shaped.

for hardware I would go with brushed silver or an antiqued finish.

maybe something like this:

or these in satin nickel:

and ok. :)

The first one isn't too far from what I want, but just in a different tone...like maybe a brushed down pewter type finish.

However the linole... ummm... tile on the floor flows. Keep with consistency.

it's shown in rustic pewter.
i chose that one because if you put the backsplash on the DIAGONAL, the knobs will mimick the shape.

AAP said:

lmao

man i have stupid linolellum on my floor that I want replaced with tile.

My problem is that it's on concrete and I've heard horror stories about people trying to get the glue off in order to set tile.

I wish there was an alternative.

diagonal

i agree with stiletto. your kitchen is plainly colored. i think you need something else - either texture or design - to set it off. the diagonal thing would bring it up a couple notches imo

^^ How come it's always the women and gays who have such great taste?

Lowes had an off brand much smaller than this one, almost entirely plastic, smaller blade, and a 3/4 HP motor for $100 more than the one above.

This one has a 10 inch blade, sturdy composite & steel construction, and a 2.5 HP motor. Man that thing is sweet!

very nice.
I have a smaller one, but it gets the job done.

go for a diamond and use a chair rail or a deco to split the middle of the space

its much more money but looks so sweet
BTW i sell flooring if it matters

When I did my kitchen I was a noobie and bought one of those small, plastic, $60 piece of crap cutter with the skinny 4 inch diamond blade.

That was teh suck!

Sweet saw aap...I got a smaller one like Stilleto...prolly cost about $190 or so without the stand.

AAP : I went with the horizontal because I'm probably gonna replace the linoleum with wood floors....probably a shade or two darker than the cabinets. With the darker color (not sure which yet) granite counter tops and soft lighting, I think it'll look cool. The tile is looking pretty sweet so far.

Horizontal. It's looking really good so far...I'm about half done setting the tile..I'll grout it tomorrow and touch up the paint around it.

you ever find out which size screws the receptacles take?

and btw, are you "nesting" (i.e. getting your pad ready for HR and baby) ?

Lol...no, it's a combination of feeding my home improvement addiction/getting the place ready to sell. I'm gonna go all out on the kitchen and bathrooms because thats the first thing the women look for and dudes do whatever they say.

I may keep the place, I'm not sure yet but I'm still looking at land in KY.

Oh yeah, I dunno where my pitch guage is, so not sure what thread is on those badboys. I'll probably make up some spacers when I go to mount the switch plates.

I have that. Good for 16" tiles. Which break easier.

You should spend the money on the nursery instead.

What tool don't you have? lol.

It's sweet isn't it? With the massive 2.5HP motor I've yet to bog the blade down. Of course I've only cut small ceramic tiles thus far.

Next weekend I will be cutting flagstone. It's pathetic I am kinda looking forward to it.

It aint ugly...turned out pretty good as a matter of fact. I'll post up pics after I grout it. I gotta wait for the mortar to fully cure. Gotta get back to Lowes and get switch plates before they close...this means that I will most likely be coming home with a new power tool .

i know... i was teasing you.
i want a wet belt sander.

I have a Harbor Freight store near me. Bought it there.

It is heavy. It has wheels, but we had to carry it thru the yard. It took 3 of us....1 on one end and 2 on the motor end.

It wasn't bad to put together either. I bought a large mortar mixer from there a couple months ago and I think they had some Chinese guy who knew the most English of any of the workers write the assembly instructions. Words were misspelled, steps were out of order, parts were different from the descriptions, etc. It was a nightmare.

Where are the pics JS ?

Geez, it didn't take anywhere this long to receive naked pics of HR. What's the holdup?

Gettig ready to grout today...I put in the under cabinet lighting and some of the hardware on yesterday...hang on, I'll go snap a pic.

Theres still a few small pieces missing...I had like five tiles left over, but they looked like shit, so I picked up a few more boxes this morning. As soon as I finish the final cuts, I'll do the grout. Probably won't do the counter tops until the end of July or so...I gotta go back out of town.

Those are pieces that haven't yet been put in place. Like I said, the tiles that I had left were shit and kept cracking every time I tried to cut one. I have some new cut pieces I'm gonna use to go around the window sill and in the back corner.

As far as the outlets go, nothing I could do about that...

I was referring to cutting parts of the tile out to fit around the sill

like so... (1 tile instead of pieces)

Yeah, those are the missing ones (that I will install today). I needed better stone to cut them out of because the ones I had were the left over shitty ones (holes, chips, etc.) I couldn't cut pieces that small with what I had.

lol, we aren't on the same page.

Instead of cutting pieces, you could have just cut it ONE tile the shape you need.

You can cut |__| shapes into tile. This is something someone taught me because I was cutting L & straight shapes too when I first started tiling.

(I'm not trying to sound like a prick, just passing along info that would save time and look better)

jack, listen to what the prick said.
it really does make a difference. even if the cuts aren't perfectly flat against the sill, it will make a big difference if they are close.
With the tile saw, you can chip away at what you want to get rid of, enough to fit it in and then fill with grout.

I make cuts down the tile.
Then hold it up 45 degrees and repeat.
Then move the tile left to right to get a smooth, straight cut when wanting to cut a notch or 'square' out of tile.

Prick?
You pick on me cuz you like me right?
Right?

yes, thats it.

I don't know if jack understands how it's done, and I just tried doing an ascii drawing that didn't work here.

lol @ ascii

Welcome to 1990!

Here Jack, since Stiletto isn't any help as usual...

1. make cuts 1 and 2 (the left and right side of the area you are cutting out) as shown in Step One below.

NOTE: elevate the tile 45 degress to cut the tile evenly all the way down to the desired stopping point as shown in Step Two for better results.

2. Make as many cuts in between those first 2 cuts until the area is chipped out. (cuts 3, 4, etc)

3. Contunuing to keep the tile elevated at an angle, slide it left to right. At this stage only the diamond portion of your blade is touching/cutting your tile so it should be easily to slide.
This gives you a nice, straight, clean cut on all edges.

I don't get it.

It's a 4 x 4 tile?

Do you mean diagonal, straight or staggered?
And you're going to put the new counter top in before the back splash no?

My only advice is to layout all the tile and take out the dark ones.

Don't bring your nonsense into this thread.

He's asking if he should lay the 4X4 tile up and down the wall, or left to right.

like this...

[][][][][][][]
[][][][][][][]
[][][][][][][]

or should it be like this...

[][][][][][][]
[][][][][][][]
[][][][][][][]

?

No no no.

he means, should he line them up left to right like this:
XXXXXX
XXXXXX
XXXXXX

or up and down, like this:
XXXXXX
XXXXXX
XXXXXX
