athletes make too much? says who? KORY STRINGER DIED YESTERDAY...

seems that most disagree with the salaries of athletes... if you want them lowered DO NOT buy any thing sports related... do not buy any jerseys, do not watch football, baseball, basketball, etc... do not support your local teams... boycott sports... its not the players fault that the leagues make billions of dollars per year... they want their fair share and rightfully so... its their bodies they give for some people in suits to make a TON of cash....

as for police... i started a thread about 4 months ago saying cops and teachers were the most underpaid people in the world and i believe matt and some others said it was their own fault for doing that job and not getting into a tech position etc...

so basically, techies are the only people that deserve a cut of the money their companies make? interesting... i believe that was the primary arguement for techies making so much and teachers/cops making so little... because 'the money the company makes should reflect the employees compensation for the job he does to make that company money'.... well, if thats your stance for computer companies etc... then it should stand firm for athletes...

by the way, the guy gets paid to be an offensive lineman, why would he come into camp at 280 and 8% body fat??? he would not be nearly as effective...

i wonder how soft some of the camps are gonna go for the next week or so due to this.

This really sucks, no ONE, and I mean No ONE, should've been running sprints and whatever in the weather yeserday and the day before, The humidity is unbearable, I was outside for 10 minutes before I was drenched with sweat, on monday a differant player feinted from heatstroke, they should've practiced inside, we ARE a DOME team after all

Actually, throwing up is common for the linemen, especially in hot weather. In college, most everyone had puked at least that many times and was only briefly checked out by the trainer. Most linemen especially are used to nausea so maybe he was just not feeling 100%, but thought he could hack it.

In truth, sometimes organ failure from dehydration can happen without a single symptom. Dehydration can happen and you wouldn't even know it. Not everyone has cherry red skin, mental disorientation, etc. If he had been subclinical all day long and just trying to stick it out, who knows if organ failure occurred all at once. Only the autopsy will confirm this WRT organ damage/ enzymes.

His family has my sympathies. You know this is hitting them hard too.

MB,

You're spewing silliness here.

I said that on LONG ISLAND, teachers and cops are overpaid. And they are. The average police salary here is $73,000 and guess what? There isn't shit for them to do. We have the world's highest paid traffic cops.

Further, 15% of all teachers on the island make over $100K. I know they work hard, and I don;t begrudge them a good salary, but that's a lot of cash for a 6 month work year. The amounts of children from bad families/disadvantaged environments is quite small. Most of the kids are from good homes with 2 parents. They don't have to be Jaime Escalante here (Stand and Deliver).

In other parts of the country, these numbers are different. Where I come from, these professions are overpaid. I never said it was the teachers' or cops' fault.

My condolences to the Stringer family. One has to question the wisdom of 330 pounders doing sprints in extreme heat/humidity, but it doesn't mater how much they make....it is sad. He was only 27, not much older than I am.

Back Doc --- you are referring more to the exception than the rule. Sure its possible. Anything is possible but truly would be an exception to known norms.

For me headaches are a sure tip off.....

Sunday from 8am - 5 pm I was outside working in the 95 + degree heat and humidity here in O'Town.
I have 8 Acres and spent the day getting rid of a HUGE pile of limbs and brush by burning it.
I also cut down 3 big dead Oak trees and cut them up and hauled them to the pasture to burn using a wheelbarrow.
My wife kept asking me "Why don't you use the truck?" It was a GREAT workout.

I was sweating like a Pig and drank probably 4 Gallons of Gatorade and water and didn't go in to piss once.
I drank even when I wasn't thirsty and that kept me going.

I'm used to doing this regularly and know how to keep hydrated, take breaks and cool myself down with a water spray.

I would bet these guys let the Macho factor or their coaches keep them going past the point of failure.

Yeah Raider I think your right...that and fighting for your spot.

Last night when I got done at the shop.......my boot were soaking.....thats when you know your sweating. Soaked foot wear.

Yeah Raider your right on the other thing...you have to get your system used to it...the gland just doesn't turn off and on...this being the start of camp....he was shocking the shit out of his system.

I was doing the above by choice.
I really feel bad for some people that HAVE to do this every day and make very little $ doing it..
Roofers, Const. Workers, Steel/Foundry workers etc.

Can you imagine some Asst Coach fuck calling you a Puss because you are puking your Colon out?

All of the FL SEC coaches except Spurrier were making comments on the news regarding the summer heat like:

You gotta condition to be ready for 2-a-days
You gotta be in condition
You gotta push your people to get them ready...

Steve's like "you gotta be careful"
Of course he was being PC because one of his guys died days ago from the heat...

Cleaner I understand your point and you're correct. However, since this is one case, the exception to the rule is perhaps a possibility for what may have occurred. Most people will experience symptom severity on the level with their dehydration. Most athletes cramp up at first sign of dehydration. There are many factors to consider in this case, his weight, physical conditioning, general constitution, pain/discomfort tolerance, how much he had in his GI tract, whatever (if any) chemicals might have been in his system, whether or not blood pH changes were severe concomitant to the dehydration, what clothing he was wearing (especially in the case of nylon), etc. Statistically, if dehydration deaths were happening on a more than seldom basis for these players then it would probably be the fault of the system and those who supervise the welfare of the players.

Another thing to think about is that most (if not all) of the players in that kind of heat would have been experiencing lag of some kind or another. The staff was probably dealing with multiple players having a hard time dealing with the heat and having to take rests and water breaks quite frequently. They may have been busy trying to minimize attrition and so didn't take the time to go through all of the checks with each player like they should have. If this is the case, then they should be liable...salaries for management are high enough that they could afford more staff and better protocols in place to deal with this problem.

I don't know if this was the case or not, to be honest. They may have done everything in their power to prevent this from happening. It's sad just the same, though.
