are u patriontic and is patriotism a good thing

I've viewed it as a team. If I were on a team I would be proud of that team and when the team represents some wrong I would take a stance against that but I would be careful not to try to stand middle ground as it would divide the team. I think patriotism is a good thing. But one needs to be careful not to be blinded by it. But that can go for anything. Including cynicism, one needs to also not be blinded by faultfinding causes.

Anything (or movement) to the extreme is bad. Hardly an indictment of patriotism.

But in essence, thats what nationalism is. A subjective paradigm which distorts the value of foriegn peoples in favor of your own. IF you arguing patrotism is nothing more then a beign force which serves as a form domestic commercial and social cohesion. I wouldnt argue. But patrotism, at least the magnitude we see in the US today, goes far far beyond that.

Sounds like conjecture. Most of them are so poor and uneducated they act out of fear of government action or reprisal. This is not patriotism.

That could be argued. From my limited experience, the Chinese, although living under a somewhat oppressive government relative to democracys, are acultured with a strong sense of nationalism in youth. Their business practices reflect this.

I think aurelius said that I was disagreeing with someone over a definition of patriotism. Maybe we are.

As an American, patriotism to me means that you are proud of your country and strive to make it the best it can be. Maybe it means you join the military...or maybe it means you just vote (as many do not).

Patriotism (at least to me) has never meant supporting the government wholeheartedly, or failing to admit shortcomings. it just means you believe it can keep getting better.

You don't have to hate other nations to be a patriot. I think a lot of people here are arguing that you do.

They wouldn't be patriots in my defintion. I think they're brainwashed, and have not made the conscious decision to become patriotic.

I like my country but no reason for me to fall in love with. So I guess I'm not patriotic but realistic instead....

ok. I gotcha. Regrettably, I dont think alot of people share your definition of patrotism. Because i think its the more enlightened of the two.

If that is your definition then you are right, we are disagreeing and i am probably confusing some people. I should clarify what 'patriotism' looks like to me.

to me it's basically just seperating the world into different 'squares'.

If there were kids starving because they couldn't afford 30 cents a day for food in America there would be billions devoted to the problem. but because alot of those kids are unlucky enough to live on a different piece of dirt the gov. really doesn't care.

Take the holocaust for example. 6 million jews died. BUT 3 million polish people died too. Our society couldn't give a shit less about the 3 million poles, but we care about the 6 million jews.

Patriotism, to me, is selective compassion which can lead to grave injustice on a global scale. if you are lucky enough to be 'in' you get all the rewards (a comparitively non-repressive government, a choice on what you want to do for a living, a choice on who you can marry, etc). if not we just ignore you.

I think an UN-patriotic soldier would be an oxymoron so yes, I guess I am patriotic.

The three stripes I wear on my shoulders say I am patriotic.... and yes, I think it is a good thing... I think people look up to the USA because of our level of patriotism. Many good people I know and don't know have died for their patriotism, and I hope to join them someday fighting for something I truly believe in.
