Are those "... for Dummies" books any good?

I think they are good for getting you into a new subject pretty quickly.

I got myself a German language one and an etiquette one.
The german thing on first glance seems to be too unadvanced for me...

Don´t know when I´ll have time to work through them lol.

I've written a number of books for them as well as contributing to many more that invovled IT certifications.

For Dummies books will teach you "how to speak the language", but you'll never achieve "fluency".

Note: I wrote for them when they were "HungryMinds Inc." They were later bought by Wiley, Inc., who publishes a lot of text books etc., so I don't know if the new publisher improved things.

Actually, I just wrote a letter to the corporate HQ and said, "I see you have book A, and book C, but where is B? If there is no B, I can write it."

Then they said "Send us two sample chapters". I did, and they said, "OK, just sign this contract and do this chapter thing 40 more times".

I didn't make that much money off of it. I made more money writing when one of the editors there gave me a project to do on September 7th, 2001. I worked on it like 12 hours a day on the 8th, 9th and 10th. (I had 30 days to do it but wanted to impress them).

Well, 9-11 happened, and then I emailed it to the editor on 9-12. They were stunned that I did it even with the attack (the work was already done, though) and the story spread inside their office. They started giving me a lot more work, and when Wiley Inc. bought them, some of the editors left. They started sending me work from their new companies. I was making a ton of money.

I gave it all up when I joined the organization I'm with now. Anyway, yeah my resume looks kinds weird.

I once handed in a 3 month project a week in in HS. The teacher accused me of plagiarism and ultimately had to send me a written apolagy

Your case this sounds like a cool way to impress.

It´s obviously not meant to be thorough... it´s called "for dummies".

the one i bought taught me the basics of how to play and bid in bridge, nothing advanced though, i would have recommended it for a newbie player

you´d obviously only pick up one of these on a subject you´re completely blank on. then possibly move on to something more advanced.
