Something about being caring and compassionate are supposed to be the prereq's..... You'd be miserable in nursing, wouldnt you sketch?

Is there something in computers that you could switch to, but have it be different enough that it feels like something else? That way your expertise doesnt go to waste?
you do customer support right? thats kinda like customer service but with computer users. i presume the burnout rate is quite high? just dealing with people's stupidity all day.

ill probably just switch companies when the economy bounces back.. I am oncall this week with way little sleep so im a little crabby.
No I could do programming but I am better at break fix, network design, email, sql, etc.

Here's what you should do.....get into setting up Electronic Medical Records for Dr's offices.......you wouldnt believe what it costs to set up!
Oh, and the best part about it, you can charge pretty much whatever the F you want for the labor/installation or whatever and the transfer of files. Dr's are typically pretty clueless about what things should cost.

customer support? no I really cant say exactly what I do but I manage email systems primarily exchange, databases primarily mssql, oracle, manage users through active directory, etc

right. and you do all that for your clients/customers. see? even if its internal to one specific company, those users are still your intermal customers. get what im sayin?
Nursing is a stable profession. There is always a shortage, the pay is decent, job security is always there, you can find a job in any town in the 50 states within a week of moving there. (assuming license is in order).
Pros -
pay (not great, but decent)
flexible schedule. (I know some that work 20 hours one day - sleep 4 hours at work, work another 20. then off 5 days)
job security
benefits
hiring bonus
Cons -
I know a lot of alcoholic nurses
must have a detachment to patients and surface level only compassion and caring.
burn out
rotation shift (unless you get lucky right out of school)
gross/awful things - ER, ICU, etc..
A male nurse is mostly used in ER for the best pay. Due to the fact that they can use their strength to their advantage in lifting patients to bed, etc..
The medical field is very stable and will also grow and have jobs. Pretty immune to economic downturns like the tech / communication / engineering sectors.
But there are other professions you can get into within the medical field where you are not a nurse or have to go 4 years to college. (If you are not spending 4 years in school, you are limiting yourself.)

4 years and you qualify for sleep nurse which gets you in the OR and into a salary of about $140K per year based on 3 days work week.
instead of a CRNA, just be an anaesthesiologists assistant, same pay, less school (if you've already got a BS)
Yes, I'm a critical care/trauma nurse...working my way into the field of anesthesia. It's a great field to get into, not to mention the fantastic G&G ratiio!
Yea, because saving lives and leaving work knowing you made a direct lasting impact on peoples lives is super geigh.
Healthcare is a fucking scam, I can't wait for some major health care reform...

I'm in the same boat as drsketch. Been a programmer since 1999 during the Y2K and .com bubble. I'm sick of working like a dog to make someone else rich.
I'm doing some personal training on the side and working on forming a wellness company.
I think the only way for you is to work for yourself somehow. You seem to get very annoyed with incompetence like myself and as long as you work in some way shape or form for someone else, there will be someone up the chain or outside of your control making your life difficult and driving you mad.
At least this is the conclusion i've come to.
I am however thankful guys like pdaddy are working hard in healthcare. You forget how important these guys are until your ass is in the emergency room or a loved one is in surgery.

bro, it cannot come soon enough. I've recently been looking into traveling agencies and the pay is more then a lot of the docs I'll be working next to. Sign onto a contract and they pay for your schooling and your mortgage while going through the program.
