Anyone noticing oil prices??

I just checked today...$41.82/b.

That's well higher than it was when gas prices were soaring, yet prices here continue to drop.

Why is this not a big deal now??

EF smartypantses.....enlighten me.

I was just saying the same thing to someone else yesterday. My guess would be that the during the peak a short while ago the oil companies were tacking on some extra profit for themselves. My next guess would be that they've been told to ease off on the profit grabbing because of the detrimental effects on the economy...added transportation costs, inflation worries, etc. Not good things to have happening when the republican oil cartel is looking to get re-elected.

prices here are still steadily climbing... just at a slower rate.

Hit $43 yesterday, which is an alltime record.

Relax in about 6 weeks you will see it hit the pumps.

Sticker shock part II.

Plus you have convention coverage drowning out economic coverage.

Remember the dollar price per barrel can be misleading. Forty-three 2004 dollars would only buy something like thirty 1983 dollars.

In constant dollars, pump prices substantially higher in '82-'83 than they are now.

one must also not forget that much of the price per gallon of gas is due to federal and state taxes.

The fed hits you with an 18.5 cents per gallon tax, and states pound you in the ass on taxes too.

For example, NY hits gas buyers with about 60 cents per gallon in taxes. This is why gas is cheaper in say, SC, than it is in NY or CA.

Government has always looked to gas as a tax source - typically the highest taxes are assessed on things we need to maintain our standard of living: income, property, gas, phones etc.

Taxes are also much higher now on gas than they were 30 years ago, so the comparison of "dollars then" and "dollars now" is only part of the story.

Matt,

Do you recall when they began banning gas statiion from posting the tax per gallon at the pumps.

What gall

I don't remember when they were specifcally banned from doing so, but I do recall - when I was a kid - that gas stations used to have a price icon on top of the pump along with a detailed breakdown of taxes.

We have no one to blame but ourselves. We're just too dumb. But until we realize that....people are going to keep looking for that "bad guy".

I guess Osama is a pretty good "Bad guy" for now.

Taxes or no taxes, the price of gas adjusted for inflation should be $8 to $10 dollars a gallon.

Well, considering taxes make up 33-50% of the price, the first clause of your sentence is hard to ignore.

I think it is more an issue of awareness, especially with respect to hidden taxes.

Osama doesn't require much hype to merit disgust.

I agree that our own apathy is much to blame

43.35 today...That's as high as I've seen it in years.

I'm still amazed no one is talking about this on the news and stuff.

I know what you mean. I'm also constantly amazed at what the mainstream media thinks we need to know, and don't need to know. The other day I'm reading about an old interview with Terresa Heinz when she was a republican. In the interview she's talking about the democrats basically being a bunch of losers and Ted Kennedy being a weasel. I'm thinking "Oh man, is that ever going to be a bombshell tomorrow!". But nope, nobody said a thing about it.

I guess there's no problem as long as the media isn't talking about it. No more AIDS epidemic, the rain forest is not being depleted anymore, no problems with the ozone, and kids are no longer starving in Ethiopia.

But the one thing they'll always be there to tell you about is when that poor, foreign kid with a foot growing out of his head arrives for his free north american surgery. We can all pat ourselves on the back at those moments and relish how truly good we are deep down inside....

As far as the oil/gas prices go...I think we have to start getting used to it until more production facilities are built, with better delivery systems. That will take some time, and as long as business insists on shipping all jobs over to Asia we're going to get killed on oil prices because of the increased Asian demand for that oil as well.
