Why would ANYONE run anywhere? Running is BAD, BAD, BAD!!!!

If your knees hurt from running then your upper body is either too heavy or your legs are too weak...or you've already injured yourself due to one of those things. Running is not bad...our bodies are designed to run. They aren't designed to do bicep curls and carry 50 excess lbs (be it muscle or fat).

So yeah....lose some damn weight (yes muscle if need be) or strengthen the muscles around your knees. Otherwise you won't be able to run.

Our bodies are not designed for the constant stress put on our entire body (not just joints) from lots of running. One does not NEED to run in order to be in shape.

But I also do agree that all the weight from waaaaaaay too much muscle is neither healthy.

I was advised to never run (not because of my joints believe it or not) but because of the shock to my internal organs from the pounding. I was far from overweight (from either fat or muscle) but the constant pounding to my GI tract (wont even talk about all the other little female parts) was also a negative.

Try swimming - excellent resistance training and you wanna talk cardio?! Holy mother of God - ZERO STRESS to any organ system. Cycling is also far less stressfull, but if your joints are already compromised, not an option sadly. Ever tried rowing? When properly executed (you do it wrong and your knees will be hurt too) gives GREAT workout and wonderful for upper body development.

As the body ages ya'll would be amazed as what movements hurt what system. When you are young, you think you will last forever. But as the body ages (everythings breaks down with the passage of time and use) too many people stop moving altogether which is a bad thing too. I am always on the search for activities that help STRENGTHEN with as little wear and tear as possible. So far swimming seems to be the activity that wins out in all departments. :)

My point is, why run (which has great potential to harm) when you can do another activity that will yield and equivalent fitness result compromising the body far less in the long run?

sam-e can help, like everyone else said, glucosamine and chondoitrin, vitamin e, some others things out there can be ok. Try stretching your hip flexors more and do some work on your I.T. band. I had knee issues because all of those were tight on me. Glutes and hammy's too. I don't know why you'd get any shit for running, I doubt you're at 20+ miles per week where it'd hurt you.

Also, try using a pillow under your knees. ;)

(had to throw one of those in there)

Not sure about that. We were built to run. Tha's how we hunted and why we have two legs...it should never be painful or harmful to do if your body is conditioned properly and you build up to it. What is not healthy is sitting in an office or in front of a tv all day and then going for an hour or unning a few times a week. Again, you need to be conditioned.

As for being 'in shape'...i'm not talking about that. Getting in shape is easy. Being strong and fit is a bit more difficult and i deliberately stay away from swimming because i think it causes our bodies to learn to move slowly and lose power (or fast twitch muscle). It is good for cardio but it depends what you want. I wouldn't ever call somebody completely fit unless they could run. Humans are basically just land animals and not many land animals survive well if they can't run...so they just get stronger.

Point taken...

However, I am more concerned with being as fit as possible while doing as little harm for the long haul. Sitting all day, watching TV, driving everywhere, crap diet = all VERY unhealthy, but sadly, all too common *side effects* of evolution.

I am not really too concerned with having to chase down my next meal LOL so I will be happy to try to feel as strong and healthy as I can for as long as I can. :) Swimming doesn't harm you while running can. Just my .02 which is like everybody's asshole. :lmao:
