My girlfriend and I just had a baby. She is going to make me pay child support. Yesterday she was telling me she got the hospitol bill, should I be expected to pay the hospitol bills etc. if I'm paying child support? I just kinda figured it was added in the child support. Also, if the custody was set up for shared parenting would the child suppport be less? I'm not trying to get outta my responsiblilities here I just don't wanna get ripped off either, I'm only 21 and don't have the extra cash to lose. Thanks!!

P.s. We had a beutiful baby boy. (Matthew Tre, 9lbs. 1oz.)

First off, congratulations on the wonderful news. Second, the med bills are not covered by the child support. Does your GF have any kind of insurance? Do you? If not you are both on the hook for the Hosp. Bills and yes I know they are probably pretty steep.

I was also thinking maybe I should ask an attorney for advice. I just have no idea how much is going to be taken out for child support and I think she's expecting me to pay that along with doctor bill etc. Thanks for the replies.

Child support determinations depend on the state that you are living in. Usually you can go to your states website and look und Human Services or the equivalent and find the child support web site. Often they will give you the guidelines that they use for child support, based upon your income.

Shared parenting should not impact the amount that you are going to have to pay for support.

Has paternity been declared on the baby? Is your name on the birth certificate? If so, you are accumulating a child support balance as we speak. It is just an unknown amount right now. So concievably when they decide upon an amount, the courts will apply that retroactively leaving you with a substantial arrears balance.

I did a lot of research work on the child support system in my state, so if you have any other questions let me know.

We did have a paternity test done and he is mine and my name is on the birth certificate. If they don't start deducting from my paycheck for 2-3 months from now do I have to pay back pay? Thats fine if I do I'd just like to know how they go about deducting that I hope they don't hit me up with 2 mos of child support all at once. I'm in Ohio by the way, I'll be sure to check the website today. Thanks again guys.

child support

Zen pretty much summed it up nicely. child support is dependent on a number of factors: The income of both parents, how many days your child stays with you overnight, etc. I just went through a very nasty custody battle and tried to learn everything I could about child issues. It appears you seem amicable which is good. My suggestion would be this website http:://www.divorcesource.com It deals primarily with divorce issues however will provide you with alot of information to your situation Good luck! I only hope that the two of you work together to co-parent your child as successfully as possible. My ex has made it rather difficult and it is always the child that suffers.

As to back owed child support the courts in your area should work with you and take a percent of what you owe plus your obligation to make it up retroactively. Just make sure you pay it becuase child support laws are serious business-good luck

Days - I am in North Dakota.

You are obligated for Child Support from the day the child is born, so you will probably have an arrears balance. My guess is they will set your child support payments then tack on 50-100 a month to satisfy your arrears.

I don't know the status of the mother but if she is receiving any sort of aid from the State that can complicate things a little more. The state then receives interest in your child support payments and will be a little more adamant about collecting. For instance if your arrears balance is in excess of $1000 they can go after your State and Federal income tax returns. They can also report it to the credit bureau.

If you are still on good terms with her, and the money is not owed to the State, she could "forgive" the arrears balance, but that is something you would have to work out with her.

Again if you have any question....
