finally upgrading, and looks like these are my 2 choices. the sbc dsl is pretty cheap so thats appealing.

i'm 15,697 feet away from a CO... is that good or bad???

basically, dsl or cable? i know theres a few threads somewhere about it buy i cant search fully and didnt find much

i'm also gonna run a wireless laptop as well as a desktop on the network, if that effects anything??

I have Cox Cable - it's not bad. It goes down about 1x a month for a couple hours - kinda weird, but never a big deal. I am happy with it. :)

15,000 feet from a CO? Fuggedabouddit. Doubt they'd even try and if they did it would suck majorly.

Either way, get a "Cable/DSL router" and do not ever let your PC see the bare cable modem. Keep that router between them as a firewall. The router can also be your wireless access point -- the major brands all make a combo box that gives you the ability to share the cable connection, a four-port switch, and wireless all in one. Doesn't cost that much more than the simple router and it's much nicer to plug in one box than three.

Just remember: As soon as you go on cable or DSL, the kiddies ARE out to get you. Wrap that rascal!

I just went wireless with my home network.

I picked up the Linksys WRT54G, wireless access point/router.

Got the wireless PCMCIA card for the laptop and it's nice.

I would recommend cable over DSL.

The only reasons one should not get cable internet are:
1) Your provider has limited the speed so that it is faster to go DSL.
2) You work for a DSL company and can get it for free.
3) You live in a very crowded neighborhood and everyone has cable and the company won't do anything to rectify the load issues this causes.

Other than those exceptions, cable is better than DSL.

I have DSL right now simply because it is the best that I can get here. I am also considering satellite if I can figure out the line of sight issues.

I have Cox cable in SoCal and it's flawless. It hasn't gone down once in 2 years. I'd give the admin a blowjob myself.

I am trying out SBC dsl right now (because I hat the cable company) but it is rather unsatisfying. I get about a third (140 Kbps) of the advertised speed (384Kbps). Which is shit. I am too far from the box I reckon.

The cable was 1.5 Mbps. I am going back to cable.
Plus, the cable is always on. Although with my router, I don't have to keep logging into the DSL like you normally would have to.

Listen to Digger and WTFmarthaNo. They speak the word.

I had DSL for 3 years and was very happy with it. I have cable now and it's much better. Doesn't go down like the DSL did, which wasn't that often but it happened and my cable is 3x faster than my DSL was.

Go for cable over dsl, I have yet to see any dsl in my neighborhood coming close to my download speed. Its also cheaper.
Time to brag...:)
2003-12-29 23:21:38 EST: 3218 / 372
Your download speed : 3218874 bps, or 3218 kbps.
A 392.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 372960 bps, or 372 kbps....like I give a shit
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!(1 mbit...bitch more like 3 mbit!)

I don't know if they forgot to place a limit or not, but recently I been hearing in advertisments that our cable modem speed getting a 50% boost. Thats about right, because in my old neighborhood I was getting around 230 KB/s dl. If anyone knows how to unlock the cable modem I am extremely interested.

Man, don't dick with it! Going back to dialup would seriously suck, and that would be the least of your problems.

cool thanks everyone, i went with the cox cable, ordered it today and about to go pick up the modem

SWEET!

what did you pay for the modem? Insight wanted like $180 for my modem but i bought a new working modem on ebay for $40. They're down to about $25 now on ebay.

you can buy new modems at Best Buy for around $100. You need to read your contract though. One cable co. in SoCal has rates structured so that you actually pay more if you buy your own modem.

What sort of gay shitznit is that? Paying for cable modem is unheard of here.

It's unheard of areas where there's a choice between cable & DSL. They'd be silly to cut fees if cable was the only broadband choice in the area. I actually have three choices - Cable, DSL plus my apt complex is wired for T-1 access to each unit.

There are a few apartments in Boston that had T-1 right to the wall - although to be fair that was what they claimed. I would assume that it was a T-1 to the building and then split between at best each floor.

Many cable internet companies work the charge for the box into your bill but it isn't necessarily seen by you.

In the end, as they all fight for customers they are all going to end up trying to be the loss leader anyway.

just waiting for the duude to come hook it up, i'm all set just need him to hit the switch!
