Anyone ever hang a flat panel tv?

SC4EVA

New member
I guess I have to jump to 2008 and get one. Has anyone installed one themselves at home? Was thinking about one of those SONY Bravia XBR ones - Room is about 12 ft wide - Is 46" big enough?

Unless you have experience in doing this... which Im assuming by ur post that you don't... I would let a professional handle it.

Mostly because I know I would die if my brand new tv fell off the wall and broke because my dumb ass wanted to put it up myself... At least if pros do it and it falls u can make them replace it.

aggree completly, you have to make sure your mounting on the studs and in the right position, there is now multipul holes in the wall behind my tv

I eneded up making a hole in the dry wall and nailing in some extra 2x4's to make sure it didn't fall off the wall. You don't see the hole or you can just patch it back up.

You are on point with that post dude.

not sure about hanging one
I just bought one and have it on a stand
I'll try and upload some pics later
I also went with the top of the line sony XBR with tri-motion
$2399 @ best buy for 40"
46 was 27-2800 ish

I hung a 54" by myself 3 years ago and I have never had a problem. There is a special mounting kit you have to buy in addition to the tv which runs close to $100.00. It is well worth the money.

If you're mechanically inclined I would try it yourself. If not pay to have it done.

I hung one downstairs it's not as big as the one upstairs but its pretty easy if you have another bro helping.

#1 thing, spend 40 bux and get a stud finder. You will wish you had after your $2500.00 plasma comes crashing off the wall.

check www.fatwallet.com and www.slickdeals.net before you go out and buy a tv. they always have AWESOME deals.

Yep, I second this^^^.

A 50 inch is really the smallest you should go for in that size room. I just installed a 50 inch Plasma for my sister on her wall. It cost $1500 for the Panasonic 50 inch plasma with a surround sound system which they sell for $450 -$500 everywhere, AND basic installation. She got a great deal at BestBuy about a month ago. They're always having these kinds of deals. The TV is 720p though. Very impressive PQ though. You would not regret it. I've seen the Tv recently for roughly $1100 Fuck the $2700 deals for a TV. That's just my opinion, of course.

I got the mount at Monoiprice.com for about $20 or so. Works great. Definitely put it in the studs. Yes a stud finder would help. You can always use it later if you're a home owner. It's very useful to have.

I also fished the cables through the walls which some people choose not to do. If you do that, you have to really pinpoint where the cable gets connected to the back of the TV and make the hole directly behind it so it can get plugged into the TV comfortably without getting kinked. All you see is the TV by itself without any wires around it. Looks very nice.

It seems like the center of the TV should be about 6 inches above eye level when seated on the couch when finished. good luck.

Panasonic Vierra 50px80u was the model number. $1100 and falling. 50 inch plasma. please no haters! I've seen this Tv and it rocks.

^^Here you go... You have a Sears nearby? Deals like this all the time. You can get the 1080p if you want too, but ehhh whatever.

and here.... http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10828&cs_id=1082807&p_id=4114&seq=1&format=2 ... $20 for the wall mount. The tilting option is ajust a few bucks more. Not worth it if you're watching from dead on and across the room. It's lower profile this way.

Read the whole thread in the first link. They compare it to the xbr... but of course their opinion.

No, everyone on EF has at least 52"...unless you mean for the home gym?

I'm going to by a 52" LCD with my stimulus money, to stimulate my house. The room is 20 X 16. I haven't checked the links those guys just put up, but at BestBuy it was a Samsung, 1080dpi, yada yada, for 2K, I thought that that was good. The LG and Mitsubishi were basically the same TV but they were 400 and 600 bucks more. the only difference was something about the contrast.

Well, contrast is everything... sort of. Different companies "fudge" the numbers, so you can't really compare true contrast with only the numbers. Plasmas have been better than LCD's for contrast, but I think lately they might have coaught up. I personally love the plasmas. If you get an LCD you should definitely get the new 120 variety instead of the 60. They are also better for brightly lit rooms because they emit a lot of light/they're "bright". But all technologies are becoming the same quality pretty much, so just pick out a good set and find it for cheap and you're good at this point in time.

btw Pioneer Elite KURO is the best TV out there right now for it's superior contrast/black level/shadow imagery. Expensive though.

you mean mouted one?

You can use a ceiling mount or a wall mount for flat panels. Get a mounting bracket depending on the size of your flat panel.

My mounting bracket is pimp. It swivels from right to left, so I can watch from the dining room or living room.

1) Swivel mounts rule. Go for that if its in your price range.

2) Get a locking mount. Make it a total bitch for someone to simply pop your TV off the wall and walk away.

Damn now I feel dumb... I traded in my LCOS 56" 1080p rear projection and got a 47" 1080p LCD wall mount. now I have to get a new 52" to stay in the cool kids crowd. Guess the 47" will just have to go in the room.

Thanks for all the feedback guys - The builder installed some type of supports/bracket in the wall but it is impossible to get him to return a phone call.

Ouch - did realize how much the XBR was =/

If you can swing the extra $ you would be better served with a plasma. I have both a plasma and an lcd and the difference is night and day for the HD channels.

i hung a 32 lcd and a 50 plasma. plasma weight is 130lbs had no trouble just have some help there when you attempt this. get bracket at walmart for 100.00 bucks comes with level, stud finder and good instructions. truth is ..its pretty simple. be strategic when choosing a spot to hang it because hiding the wires can be tough. ive done this twice so if you have questions i could help!

what I am concerned with is the glass screen, I have 10 year old and he plays baseball/ hockey and other sports with his Dad in the Living room, despite all the yelling from his mother. (we cracked the plastic screen on the big 52" Pioneer projection, but hey, he made an excellent shot over my shoulder, lol).
Also, in reading about the two, one report said that plasmas reflect light really badly, we have french doors in that room and a wall of windows too, I was swayed by that report. Is any of that a concern or what's yalls take on it.

i actually sell electronics for a living and its all preference on lcd or plasma but the plasma does have glass screen. so you will get glare from screen if you have lots of windows in that room. lcd no glare at all. but i own one of each and have no favorite.

Thanks Yall, I do have windows, the french doors are always open (no curtains/ blinds) and we have a 10' row of windows a few feet down that same wall. I'm thinking that the LCD is the only way to go.

Stevie, I'm gonna get a 52", give me your "expert" oppinion on the ones that are out there. I was going to get one at BestBuy, but I haven't checked the links that were given earlier. My thoughts on buying off the internet are service concerns. If I get it at BB, I can just take the sumbitch back and tell them to fix it, off the internet, it's not that way. If the savings are big enough, maybe it's worth it... discuss

the price jump from a 50 to 52 is astronamical. if you have no intetion on getting a blue ray player then 1080p is not a big deal. 1080i is still a beautiful thing when watching an lcd. they will try to up sell you into 1080p but if you can have some saving in getting 1080i thats what i did. sonyu is over priced and over rated. lg is your best bet, toshiba also makes awsome lcd at affordable price. ( if the windows are not on opposite wall of tv the the glare wont be a problem for plasma)most def do not buy online. wait for the sunday paper and do some shopping because the prices have dropped over the last year.

its nto a big deal ...dry wall you just put the anchors in the wall and screws that expand when they go through the drywall...unless you pull on that tv it aint moving...or if you mount it to rotted drywall...lolol...makes sure you mount by a wall outlet so you can run the wires behind the wall and out the bottom to plug it in and for cable acc...

Sorry bro but there is NO WAY drywall (most interior wall board is 1/2" thick) is going to hold a 200+ lbs. TV.

sigh.....

in the regular class I agree(basic 40-52 inch lcds)
but if you're talking "top of the line kick you in the nuts is that picture for real?" class sony is NOT overrated
you get what you pay for

My room is 12'1 wide - Would a 52" or 46" be a better fit?

I see a XBR for $2,299 (46") and $2,699 (52")

Just went and checked both out - The 52" will be way to big for the room - Going to pick up the Sony XB4 "46 for $2200

are you buying online or in a store?

try to buy online as you will save sales tax. also, most places ship free.

they say you should sit no closer than 12 feet from a 50 inch tv. si if your closer than 12 feet than go smaller.

I don't have the chart in front of me, but my guess is this is way WRONG. The guy getting a 46 instead of a 52, would be better off with the 52. No one gets a Tv and says "it's too big". not with HDTV. Like I said earlier, I just installed one for my sister and they are less than 12 feet away and it's perfect size.

It's a 50 inch and $1100. (Panasonic plasma, I mentioned it above) lol @ $2600 and other prices. Seriously folks, look at the $1100 TV first, if your eye does not like it, THEN pay $2600 for a 50 or 52 inch.

and listen to Poink too. wtf? These prices are high. shop around! online...

Also, make sure the HTiB (surround sound system) you get for the TV is compatible in regards to inputs that the TV or other components you have will connect to it. If you need an hdmi or two, or digital audio etc... make sure your HTiB has those inputs or outputs or whatever your plans are. good luck.

PS If you want "the best of the best", then get the Pioneer KURO. Nuff said.

strongly disagree in comparing

strongly agree, my brother has one

My place came with some sort of bracket already in the wall for hanging the tv - The Home Theather guy who installed it offered me a package with the Pioneer Kuro but wanted like $6000 with surrond sound.

I hear what your saying about the 52" but when I went to the store it just seemed to overwhelming for the space.

i been telling people the saem thing..nobody listens...i have a 50 inch plasms and a 37 inch lcd piad less then 1600 for both...both have amazing pictures 1080i...people are fools that spend 2500-3000 on a tv anymore

or You believe what the the salesman at the store tells you.

I've hung a flat panel before, and I'm a woman...lol. You guys aren't very handy...lol. it's easy.
