Anyone ever do Job Shadowing?

Or something of the sorts? A few years back I did it for an coworkers son... and he's now working part time with us in the engineering dept. This Friday I am doing it again for another coworkers son.

Its pretty cool for about an hour... then I feel like I have this little fly following me around and I want to swat it.

I guess EF will be off limits for me on Friday! :(

(shush all you damn haters... ya know you will miss me) :qt:

would somebody answer me

F**k

is that the shadow's new job..."shadowing"?

Damn but you are demanding!

Yes, actually the local high school would bring teens in who said they wanted to be whatever it was that we were doing (personal training for me) and they followed me around and had one on one chats. The supervisor (county social worker) couldnt praise me enough to my boss for being so direct and straight-forward with these kids.

One teen wanted to be a personal trainer, the other a teacher's assistant (she was in our gym childcare).

After a few sessions with me the kid who wanted to be a personal trainer decided that he should stay in school and go into sports medicine or maybe even be a gym teacher (personal training is not what it is cracked up to be IMHO) and I encouraged the girl to try to become more than just a teacher's assistant - maybe become a teacher.

BOTH TEENS were mentally handicapped but I treated them as if they weren't. The supervisor said that I was THE FIRST person she had met who did that and it truly affected the kids positively because I did.

I had hopes of going into the schools and giving motivitional talks to the kids/help with career counseling/bolstering self-esteem, etc... but that was before this nightmare with my ex caused me to become inelligible.

I followed around a Pharmacist for a day... Made me realize that there is no way in hell that I wanna be a retail Pharmacist.

Yes and admittedly I didn't find it enjoyable, mostly because I don't like to chit chat - I want to sit down, do my work and not be interupted if at all possible. Being shadowed made me feel responsible to explain everything as if I were training someone.

You know - I never really thought about it until your post but as much as I disliked it, it's probably a great idea for people to experience.

I can think of several fields of work that had I known more about it in my teens I would have pursued.

If more people donated just a few hours of their time a month to kids like this think about how positively we would ALL be affected!

Kids would get a more realistic notion of what the job is REALLY like and also be exposed to careers that they might not otherwise know they'd be interested in afterall.

It really is... The previous guy is now in school for architecture. I worked with him in auto-cad and solidworks and convinced my boss to hire him part time (we needed some help).

I really don't mind doing it, thats why I said I'd do it for him and the other student coming in. Its just weird having someone follow you around and feeling like you have to try to keep the day interesting when you are just so used to not talking to anyone unless needed.
