make sure you get the "jasper" units..........google it and it'll show which product numbers you have to look for to make sure you're getting one of em.

I spent all sunday with my boy doing one of the rrod fixes.......didn't work. He was going to try something else so not sure if he got it up and running yet but it's doubtful. He decided to try to do it himself first cause microsoft is now being a giant j-0-0 about things. You gotta send em $100 bucks and if it breaks down again once they send it back your only recourse is to buy another one or send it to em again for another $100. Like I would think that if you spent another $100 to send it in and they fixed it, that would extend the warranty at least for a year so if you had to send it back a month later they would cover it. Nope.............they turned into sony this time around. So I don't think I'll be buying a product from either one of those companies for some time. The "jasper" units supposedly have no issues with overheating since the processors were manufactured on a smaller die. That industry is becoming a complete scam. I can't wait for cloud technology to make hardware acceleration obsolete.

I'm surprised they've sold so many of these things like this. I've heard even the new ones have about a 12-15% failure rate. You can only retool a pos so much I guess. That's what they get for rushing it to market. I hope they take their time with their next console.
Anyways, this fall it sounds like MS will drop the price of the Elites to $300, and the Premium model to $200. Arcade consoles will probably be eliminated.

I am not claiming to be a computer hardware wizard.....but I have some experience with putting stuff together. When we took this thing apart and I got to see the inside.......it's kind of no wonder that these things overheat. The intake and exhaust fans are right next to each other. Does that not sound counterintuitive? I couldn't say whether positioning the fans different would have had a great impact, you would have to run airflow tests inside the case. You would "assume" that microsoft had done that, but who knows. I realize what water cooling kits sell for, but I can't imagine that if microsoft contracted someone out to make those for them....that it would increase their cost all that much. In fact after this debacle, they might not be able to "not" put something like that in their next console. Maybe the die process will get so shrunk down by the time the next console's roll through that this will be irrelevant. But I already suspect that both microsoft and sony would take that as an excuse to make smaller and smaller systems instead of leaving em the size they are so they can cool properly.

Systems shrink after dies shrink enough. New systems will likely have brand new chips so the dies will likely be bigger again. That's why I'll never buy another console at launch (at least for my own enjoyment) or even two years later. Best to wait til the inards shrink not to mention the price.

I thought they extended the warranty to three years cuz of the lawsuit. What's this $100 business? Just send it in and pay for shipping.

the ole bait and switch apparently...lol

I think his was out of warranty....which is fine, but if they send it back and it still don't work you should be able to send it back again and again till they fix it right.

After they fix it, I thougth they give u a new warranty? All places are like tihs, even mechanic shops. If it's been 3 years w/o rrod - he should consider himself damn lucky!

Only good thinga bout the xbox is it's online play and ease of programming for programmers.
