No I don't have a welder, but I've seen some small setups on Ebay stores for under $300. The biggest reason I wanted to go the DIY route first was actually not the money, but the classes would mean not getting home until almost 11pm every Mon to Thurs night for 9 months.
Do you know anyone who welds? If so I would hook up with them and get some OJT. I learned how to fix engines by having a friend show me. Same with woodworking (but I did take a class in high school for that)
