Hey guys, can you suggest fish, either fillet/whole/steak that's low priced and good for pan frying or searing?

I eat Tilapia a lot -- get it in the big packs from Costco

thank you! I couldnt think of the name of that fish. That's the same product we buy, except at Sam's. Comes in a big bag, but with each individual Tilapia seperately vacuumed packed, right? But what about he pan frying and searing part of his question? Is Tilapia good that way? I've only broiled it.

Lion, you consider Salmon cheap? We can only afford Salmon steaks maybe once a month.

Actually at Costco, the Tilapia is sold in a big pack like the chix breasts then I bring it home, pack it into baggies & freeze. They are not individually packed. My local grocery store also sells Tilapia & Salmon in vacuum sealed packs for $1 each on sale -- then I stock up!!

I get a piece of foil, fold in half, spray with cooking spray, fold the 3 sides in & bake in my toaster oven for 20-30 mins. Season as you wish. That's easiest for me....

salmon
tilapia
mackerel
kingfish (a larger type of mackerel)
snapper

costco is too far for me to go, but chinatown is real close
there i get all my fish
i have even found sushi grade bbq eel and one of my fave fish, orange roughy, at great prices
individually frozen or as with the kingfish in a bag of 4 steaks
a 18 pound case of the kingfish is 28$ CAD
some larger stores in chinatown will have live fish in tanks and will catch and clean them for you for cheap
usually it will be snapper, sea bream or porgy

all the fish i mentioned above except the eel can be panfried, sauteed, grilled, baked or steamed

i buy frozen salmon filets at my local grocery for about 3.50 per lb... i stock up whenever they have it, i try to have salmon every day.

Also try halibut if you can find it, very similar to tilapia. My personal choice for cooking is a light blackening (watch sodium) sprinkled on and cooked in a pan. Takes under 10 minutes.

halibut while a diner's favourite is abit on the expensive side
personally i find it bland but to each his own

just found canned yellowfin tuna 6 cans for 7.99 CAD
damn i love president's choice

You can get salmon in a can for 99cents. It has 84 grams protien per can and very little fat. The cheapest way is to go fishing yourself.

Acme (an Albertson's store) had the vacuum packed Tilapia filets & Wild Salmon filets for $1 a pouch....Whoooo!!

hey bros, forgetting the least expensive fish, well for me anyway, in La. Catfish, usually cheaper than any other fish..but like i said, maybe because of where i live..jc

I don't know where you guys get your catfish from in Canada, but 75% of the catfish sold in the U.S. in pond raised right here in Mississippi. Pond raised catfish are fed a special fish food and they live in fresh, clean water from underground wells.

true i forgot about farm raised
i just remember catching them back in cali as a kid

I think living on the Mediteranean I got a slight advantage in the seafood dept.. Tuna Steaks for like 2 euro.. I pick up 5 packs of 2 every time im at the grocery store.. which is approximately.. 3 times a week to support my diet.. is harring fatty or is that ok in protein.. desalted of course..

herring is on the oily side
but realize that these are beneficial fats
hi omega 3's and 6's
but i suggest fresh herrings rather than processed (ie salted, marinated or smoked)
one fish i might not suggest is escolar aka oilfish
it is so oily it is can be akin to taking a ex-lax

Cod filet (high on protein) and Salmon (fatty). Both aren't really expensive around here.

But you eat tilapia? Tilapia is a freshwater garbage fish.
did i say i ate tilapia?
i serve tilapia in my restaurant because of demand
i am very very picky in what i eat
tilapia aka jesus fish is a distant relative to the catfish not as fatty
originating from africa it can live where most fish cannot
so it was the ideal fish to farm
it is lo fat so it became popular

personally i cannot pass by pacific king salmon(esp bristol bay, copper river or yukon river), mackerel, king fish, sea bass and yellowtail
i rarely eat fresh water fish
i was merely answering the man's query

Tilapia gets old in a hurry. What's grouper and snapper going for over there right now? I was thinking of heading down to Joe Patti's here and grabbing some.

everything is through the roof right now-paying 3.85 for gags and as much for genuine red snaps, were charging 12.95 in the mrkt for both on fillet.

even mangrove snapper is going for high two's and it was always a 2 dollar fish

I usually wait for the sunday paper and find out where the cheapest meat/ fish sale is....and load up on it

I bag the meat up into portions in sandwich bags and throw them in the freezer

**** TRy preseasoning or marinating when you are packaging the meat into sandwich bags.

MY favorite is filet mignon (when I can get it cheap) encrusted in black pep
percorn. or chicken in italian dressing. fish with old bay / lemon/lime juice

I take out enough portions in the morning to defrost for the rest of the day. VOILA
