ok, i don't fly fish, but there is a really good deal on flies, so i am going to pick up some flies for them, but i have no clue what to get.

any suggestions?

I don't fly fish as much as some, and not as much as I would like, but I don't think a person could ever have too many flies. Pick some up that match the bugs in your area. And get at least two of each if not more. If you stick with fly fishing, you can make your own flies later on from the patterns you already bought. Plus if you have multiple flies and you go to a new area, you can trade with someone else.

depends on what you are fioshing for, where you are fishing, and what the fish there eat.

Wooly Boogers are good in lots of different waters with olive and darker greens working best for me, for trout.

A little of everything, depends on what you are after.

Cheers

I'm mostly a bass man. Flies are too quite for those fat bastards.
For trout in a drier climate then NY, I'll use my fly rig.
Depends on the current/waves, water body, fish, line (big variable), temp, etc....
I had the best luck with Mayflies, Nymphs, and Beadheads. I never used red.
For steelhead, I had some luck with homemade Caddis on a lead jig-head.

fished for sea-run cut throats last night. landed a 3 incher! First of the season. they're usually a foot long and 2lbs. those fish hammer anything they can. fun to fish if you get a chance. here's a little gem i read today; "When searching through patterns remember to follow the old adage "Bright day, bright fly; dark day, dark fly." I was using a dark fly, when it was bright out, and still managed to get a bite before I left. I am now ready for fall.

Buy them all. You'll use them sooner or later. Every lake, stream, river, creek, pond will have its own unique menu for the fish that live there. Fish are picky little boogers, too. What they ate one day might not be what they eat the next... damn them.

bluefish looks fun. a buddy of mine just got back from an ocean trip at nea bay, washington and had a blast catching sea bass and salmon on the fly.

I am about ready to start building my own flies. I just bought a small handful for $20 and I could have easly dropped $200 more.

I haven't fished the Gulf of Mexico yet, but I have an *weight fly rod which work well there for bigger spotted trout, sea bass, redfish and others.

someday. :)

I just asked the same question.

Being an avid flyfisher for many years, mostly for trout, there's way too many things to consider. Water type, season, dry flies, wet flies, nymphs (we all like them), fish you're after, etc. We need more info.
For a kick, try salt water flyfishing. 48" 30# sand shark is a blast. Not near salt water? Any type of fishing can be done with flies. Try pike on a fly rod. Wow! 3' 15# bad boy, whew! Bass on flies are a blast.

If you buy them from a "fly fishing" store (like Bob Marriott's in Fullerton, CA), you'll easily spend at least $2 per fly. There's several discount sellers - Ligas Discount Flies in CO. Of course, if you do have the time, tying is much cheaper and quite enjoyable. I usually sit down on a Saturday with a stack of DVD's ready to watch (in the background) and several beers (no good for the diet) and tie all day. Depending on your skill level and what you're tying, you can get quite a few done in 6 hours or so (20 - 30 flies). The biggest deal with tying is the initial expense. Once you got past that, it's a huge moeny saver.
