I would much prefer to have the metric system. I have no clue as to why we keep it but my only theory is that the money to change everything from road signs, maps, databases, every single thing that uses our standard would have to be changed. That in it of itself would be a monumental task.

True, the cost would be high...but can you imagine the savings when you import goods from the far east or any other country (for that matter)? I figured that it would be an easy sell when you take that into consideration.

No idea why we don't just standardize everything. The arguement back in the day was everyone will have to buy two sets of tools. Everyone had to buy two sets of tools anyways. 32 degrees 0 degrees so what either way it's cold. Kilogram, 2.2 lbs. if everyone uses kilos you don't need to know that and strangely I think a lot of people in the US know how to measure things in kilo's.
Not sure what the myth of Horatio Algers has to do with the metric system, but that still doesn't explain why the US still likes it.

Well, I'm not going to go so far as say to standardize everything. You wouldn't want to standardize things that give you a competitive advantage.

I use it regularly, I measure my food in grams and I speak in terms of meters when describing distances.

Those damn AC chargers with everyone of them being different annoys me too. Those won't be standardize though.

You know we were going to convert many years ago, I imagine some of you were not thought of yet. But I can remember it well. Society just couldn't adapt. So the project was shut down. Now people are smat, and understand it more, maybe a second try is in order?
True, but I can conceptualize the cost of having a standardize language when so many countries have their own. With weights and measures, there are three countries out of the world. I figured that the cost to change would be less.

The STOOPIDEST measure is the stone, equal to 14 pounds and to 6.35029318 kilograms......WTF kinda number is that?
I'm a cyclist so I use metric for everything except height and weight. From memory my bike's:
seat tube length = 53cm
top tube = 53.5cm
seat height = 71cm
chainstay length = 40.6cm
handlebar width = 42cm, reach = 82mm, drop = 132mm
fork rake = 4.3cm
I can tell you the weight of most of the parts in grams. I couldn't tell you any of that stuff in Imperial measurements, but I know the entire thing weighs 15.6 lbs.

My value proposition is to have a common set of measurement that would ease transportation and shipping costs from country to country. Given that your country's manufacturing base has dwindled (and will likely continue to do so), I thought it would be prudent to switch to save your country some money.
Prime factorizations? Tell me how that makes you money. It's a nice math problem, but I'm not seeing the real world practicality of it.

Okay, why don't we use it? Because we're taught imperial measurement first, like anything else, language included, what you learn first and earliest is what you find easiest to understand.

Did you not see the value proposition in the previous threads? Changing language or currency would be difficult, because there are too many variants across the world. Change measuring systems would be easy because there are only two and one of them is only used by three countries.

I was a chemistry major. I got comfortable with metric, but it is just a matter that most Americans are more familiar with our system that is in place.

Yep, that is probably the only reason. We still have old folks who don't know metric system, so they just keep what we have. They probably I am guessing teaching the children now the metric system, so one day they will convert over.

Exactly! None of this 1/8th, 1/4, bullshit. Just 1,2,3,4,5,6 mm, cm, meters. If it's a half of one of those it's simply 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, etc.
How can anyone think that the metric system is harder blows my mind. It really does because if you actually sat down and thought about how much more simplified and unified the system is, it really is leaps and bounds ahead of this archaic system we use.

Well a lot of other countries use a mix of the systems. In the UK you still drive in miles per hour, distance is in miles and yards, you order beer in pints (royal pints at that which are 17 ounces), and if you ask how much someone weighs you get it in stones. In Canada you still use lbft of torque, on drill rigs you often still use gpm for flow, if you ask someone how much they weigh or how tall they are you get an imperial answer.
As for your trade system idea, that's what conversion charts, calculators, and computers are for. Also since a lot of industrial standards are set in the US it is the rest of the world that has to convert for their needs.
Lastly it would cost billions of dollars to convert everything in the US to the metric system, so that in and of itself pretty much ends the argument.
