I'm watching the History Channel show "WW II in HD". This is a mini-series full of old war film. They've been showing dead bodies mangled and burnded, starving people, etc. There was even a clip of a woman killing herself by jumping off of a cliff. Then they showed a clip of a naked baby boy, probably about two years old standing up drinking water. They blurred out the babies genitals! WTF?

It's not that I actually want or need to see the babie's penis to get the point of the show, but this just demonstrates the mentality of our society. Right in the middle of showing some of the most gruesome video known to exist, the only thing consored is a babie's penis! I guess they were afraid of fines by the FCC like the Janet Jackson nipple shot.
 
I agree. Its like when they show movies on cable, allow them to say "ass," but bleep out "God" in "God Damn."
 
you all dont agree that this baby boy deserves some dignity? I know that naked kids get shown all the time in bathtime pics and whatnot..but still at the same time....

Don't the dead people and their surviving family deserve some dignity? If you were killed and your body mutilated would you want that shown on TV? I would not want that and I would much rather have naked baby pictures of me shown.
 
I'm assuming it has more to do with the legal definition of child porn. Obviously it's not being used in THAT context, but why would a production risk it when it's a simple blurring task?

Great series, btw. It's amazing how color film can make the sequences feel as if they just happened yesterday.

At the point where they are showing his dead body, they are removing any dignity and privacy from his death. Blurring the penis at that point is beyond absurd.

Oh my bad...didn't really read the first post, just kinda skimmed it.

The point remains though that with everything they were showing it hardly stands to reason that they would suddeny care about dignity.
 
I agree - saw the same thing on while watching a re-run of Good Morning Vietnam. They had some kids showering off under a rain gutter and blurred out the genitals.

I was like - wow - are we really that sensitive now?

My daughter was in a magazine when she was an infant. I think I am going to go back and ask that her nipples be blurred out for that ad.

Guys, seriously, I doubt it was an issue of prudity for the film compilers. I think it was more of a 'pick yer battle'...censors probably would have redtagged the series for one shot depicting a child's penis simply out of fear of litigation, so the option is either loose the shot or manipulate the image. Obviously the filmmakers felt the shot/sequence was compelling enough, dramatically, to want to keep it in, so they blurred it. It's as simple as that.
 
I dunno. I could just be me. Im not a big fan of naked baby photos or video below the waist, bathtime or not, death documentary or not. I also dont like looking at dead bodies...so I guess I'm one of those prudes.

You're not prudish, Cindy. You have a valid concern in light of proprietary issues regarding filmed imagery...who really is entitled to use what, and for what purpose.

My point is that only in the land of "free speech" would such a pick yer battle situation ever enter anyone's mind.

*"Only in the land of the free" refers only to modern nations. Islamic nations are not included as they regularly decapitate other humans wantonly but are offended by a female exposing her face.

They also have game shows where the hot chics are topless. I remember having to always look over my shoulder when I snuck my first looks at a Playboy at the local party store, such a shame. There was a little bit of a tactical thrill in it though at that age, I'll give it that.

I can remember getting my first porno mags at about 10 years old. I had never seen a vagina before. That's pretty sad to be 10 years old and not even know what the opposite sex looks like. I grew up being taught by society that certain parts of a person's anatomy were "naughty". I think it repressed me a bit sexually when I was growing up. Now you might consider me a naturist (aka nudist). I enjoy nude recreation. Whenever I go to Florida I always schedule a few days at Haulover Beach in Miami. It's a nude beach. It's a comfortable atmosphere to be naked. However I do have an irrational fear of a shark biting off my penis.

Meh...at young ages we are innocent. Why compromise that innocence by implying that there is something sexual about our bodies at that age? In a documentary that is showing all kinds of honest brutality, it seems ridiculous to get hypersensitive about something that should be a non issue. Lets not sexualize our kids by dirtying the images of their naked bodies with blurring.

Like I said its just me. I was molested as a child so I cant help it. Kids are sexualized unfortunately. Lotta pervs out there. Its my opinion. Nothing MEH about it.

I guess I can see how your view point would differ from mine. I still think modesty should not be an issue for a baby. Face it, they require someone else to change their diapers and bathe them.
