Guys, cut him a break, we were all newbies at one point and all asked stupid questions. These types of flames are what drive people away from elite, which is obviously not a good thing.
To answer your question, nobody knows whether or not he used gear except himself. Some on this board believe he did, given his usual scrawny physique, while obviously some dont think so.

I think you probably aren't around a lot of big people. I used to be that way. When I was younger, I would think guys like Dolph Lungren were huge! Then once I really got into bodybuilding, and hung out with some powerlifters, and bodybuilders, I look back and think those guys weren't that big at all!
As for Ed Norton, he was not big at all in that movie. It's the magic of being cut. You always look bigger when you are cut. Look at Jamie Fox in Any Given Sunday, he got cut, and put on a little muscle, and he looked way different than he usually does. All of these looks can be achieved with some time in the gym, and playing around with your diet.
