I've been involved in tracking down motherfuckers on the internet than anyone here x 99892372327.3 guaranteed... and it has rarely ever lead to getting video captures of said perpetrator..... and these were all serious tresspass / fraud / theft cases - not some fool using someone's account to post on some silly fitness chat board.

There was some young geeky asstard that was seriously harrassing a female board member here back when NONE of the shit that assholes proliferate daily was tolerated. They traced the IP (or something, I am VERY ignorant admittedly when it comes to these things) and it came back to a university computer. The school has those things on camera. So when admin at elite complained about this guy's seriously harrassing posts, they just searched through the tape to see exactly who it was that was using that particular computer when the posts were made.

The kid got into a shitload of trouble because he was harrassing someone with a university computer.

Big Rick Rock or AAP or Wodin or Velvett may remember.

It was a loooooooooooong ass time ago.

Anytime I have ever been able to get information from third parties - such as who was leased an IP, information from a publicly accesable computer that may help me determine who was using at the time the alleged crimes occured, physical access information to buildings / room - such as sign in/out sheets, card access, lists of people that had keys - or ANY video that maybe available - it ALWAYS required subpeonas.

Nobody turns that shit over without that so it seems the story is preposterous. Are you claiming the courts were invovled and compelled the university to turn over the video?

People are more cognisent of privacy today, but if that's true that university was insane to have turned over any information that easily.

I've had some system admins work with me on some some very basic high level information, but most the time unless you are working for them in some capacity to help them out - track down an intrusion on their network they aren't to helpfull or forthcoming.
