Allergic Reactions

Two weeks ago I woke up with a swollen upper lip and a rash/hives over my shoulders and inner thighs. The swelling was gone in about 6 hours. Then a week later woke up with a swollen lower lip(bad),again it went away about 6 hours later. 3 days later, woke up with swelling under both eyes, went away 6 hours later. This morning, woke up with swollen left upper lip and a mild rash on my elbow. Both of which are now completely gone(6 hours later).

I'm thinking food alergy. Anyone have any idea what's up?

You need to determine what has changed in you diet or surroundings first. Just getting hives or a rash is one thing, but having some peri-orbital swelling is another. The swelling could eventually lead to respiratory compromise which you dont want. You are definately allergic to something and from what you have said, I think it would be a safe bet to see your Dr and find out what is causing this. I am very allergic to bee stings and fire ant bites. I develope the same kind of swelling around the eyes and mouth. This is the main reason why I always have an Epi-Pen close by. If you start to have trouble breathing you need to give yourself a shot with the Epi-Pen. Epi, or epinephrine is just adrenaline and will keep your air way from swelling shut. Go to your Dr and find out what is going on!

I'd suspect a surrounding allergy before food because of the rash placements. A different soap? Different laundry detergent?

Thanks for the replies and information guys. I have narrowed it down to two things. A joint supplement that I recently started, which I have discontinued 1 1/2 weeks ago. A new flavored protien(punch), which I have stopped taking as of yesterday. Other then those two items, there is nothing new in my diet or items I use. Yesterday, I had a protien shake prior to leaving my job. As soon as I got home I started to get hives on the back of my legs, so I suspect the punch flavored protein.

I've never had ANY allergies in the past, so this is very bizzare for me.

Thanks again and I'll keep everyone posted.

i think i developed a really bad cough/allergic reaction to ribomatrix by reflex due to the E numbers in it. it was so sugarey sweet it made me feel sick drinking it. it took me 3 months of coughing and prescriptions to find out it was an allergy. dont touch the stuff now, although the protein powder never gave me any probs.
maybe start a new thread for supplements that have caused allergic reactions. we need to tell the manufacturers to put warnings on their supps if they're making us swell or cough!

time to see a doctor

i think it is type 4 hypersensitivity where if you have an exposure to an allergen you get a not so major repsonse and the second time u have it its bad enough too kill

while it doesnt sound like that for you its definatley worth going to the doctor, getting tested and finding out exactly what in the powder u are allergic to (assuming it is that) so you know to avoid it

What are you eating before you go to bed? Yes a skin prick test will tell you what you are allergic to.

As far as enviornmental allergens you should do the things allergists will tell you
1. encase all mattresses and pillows in vinyl zip up coverings (dust and dust mites)
2. Use only hypoallergenic bedding (cotton and uncolored)
3. remove all carpet and upholstry (dust and dust mites)
4. remove all stuffed animals from the bedroom (dust mites)
5. remove all cardboard boxes used for storage
6. use HEPA air purification and it best to use purifiers ionizers as the particles are are too small for the filter will stick together in the air and then fall to the ground (all airborne allergens)
7. use demite and tannic acid to remove dust mites and dropping
8. clean all plug leaks in the house (molds)
9. use allergen air filters in your furnace and keep the fan turned on (3M makes an ultra allergen 1250 rating filter)
10. Use demite laundry detergent additive on all your clothes http://www.natlallergy.com/cgi-bin/MySQLdb?MYSQL_VIEW=/cart/search/view_one_spread.txt&spreadid=1235

I forgot about vacuum cleaners. Vacuum bags are useless for holding dust particles molds etc because thye are too small. Pass right through the bag while you are busy working and land right back on he carpet that you think is clean. You need a vacuum with a plastic container and with a hepa filter so that tiny particles will not land right back onto your carpet
