Advice needed

I am in the middle of my undergraduate education, but I have an opportunity to work for my friend's company as a land surveyer. He needs people and the pay starts at 60K per year. (this is in sacramento California). It can go up from there to eventually 6 figures.

I am a journalism major right now and when I graduate in 2 years I'll be lucky to be making 40K to start.

Should I take a year off school, maybe more, to earn some cash and maybe develop this new career opportunity?

This is one of those decisions you are going to have to make on your own. Lots of opinions both ways but its your life and you should make it work however you see fit.

I would love to be a land surveyer. Sweet job. My uncle was one till he walked off the face of the planet

I know. Ultimately I will make the decision, but the process is helped by getting different points of view and opinions.

Obviously someone who loved the job would jump at it, while for me, I think my interest in journalism will lead to a more rewarding career even if it doesn't pay as much.

At the same time, other areas of my life would be enhanced by having more money at my disposal.

I'm leaning towards school, my parents would kill me if I took time off and they are currently still helping me out with some expenses (via loans).

Two things to consider -- is the surveying job one that you want & is there a future in it? The other -- will you be able to go back to complete the degree? It can be a hard thing to do after being in the job market for awhile. However I've gone back twice for master's degrees while working full time and at least you've gone through your first 2 years (weed-out classes & required classes) so you would have more flexibility in completing it while working.

Good luck!

Sassy is insane. I still love her but she is Nizzuts.

Journalism is an atrocious career field, you will be working with morons for nio money.

I work with a medical publisher in my spare time. I know that biz very well.

I also do real estate stuff and surveying jobs will not go away. I just paid a surveyor $1,000 for a day of work.

You tell me.

The surveying is good money, but I'd be in the field, and it would likely be the same thing over and over.

Journalism has many outlets, and you can start as a writer, move to editor, even publisher. You could stay local, or apply for an AP job. You can start in something like community news, move to sports, etc.

I think I'd like to finish the degree, the surveying job could still be a possibility in the future. Basically now my friend's father is training his son (my friend) to take over, but they need at least one more full time person. I don't know how cool I'd be with working for my friend which would eventually happen.

True and True.

Surveyors can do pretty well and there is always a need for them.

Bor, I work in pharmaceuticals, high level financial services, and real estate in several different roles from investing to construction.

It's all the same thing over and over.

You have not worked a day in your life as a journalist. I can tell by your words.

I got my jobs through my best friend. We're still best friends.
