A Strongman's Routine?

BOOEY

Banned
Obviously a strongman's routine in the gym is going to be very different from a bodybuilder's. How many reps do strongman perform for the big lifts, smaller lifts, etc. How often does a strongman perform his 1rep max? Is it all about pushing as much as you possibly can every time you step in the gym, or do strongman rotate between light days and heavy days like most bodybuilders do?

good post, Booey. In a few weeks I will be posting a routine I am putting together to start training strongman. When I post that up hopefully we'll see a lot of input from knowledgeable bros here and learn exactly how strongmen do train, in and out of the gym. (I know that was no help at all to this thread tho!)

The only thing that I know for certain is that the core is your primary object of training, so deep squat, box squats, deadlifts, OHP's, Clean all the get down and dirty shit people don't want to do you need to do it. That means grip strength, upper back, lower back, hamstrings, stabilizers WSB does wonders if you modify it, so does 5x5. I have a log up in trainig forum

Agree 100%. Strongman is often about doing the "dirty work" in training. No weaknesses...anywhere.

Also, be prepared to get dirty, sweaty, and go into animal mode quite often. You never know what you might say, do, or feel. You just learn to go into survival mode.

I remember after going 0/3 on my log press at St. Louis (first event...took last place) and so did my buddy next to me. He was pretty down and upset. He was ready to just go home and he told me he was ready to go home. I looked over at him and told him that I never wanted to hear that again. We came here to fight a war and to prove something. Our backs are agaisnt the wall...now it is time to come out fighting.

various strongman events

THURSDAY LEGS

rear rows 4x10
side lateral raises 4x10

calf raises(seated)
calf raises(standing)

SATURDAY REST

SUNDAY EVENTS
various strongman events

I do the main core events at 5x5 so i can hopefully get a good strength base built up, and the assistance excercises i do at 4x10 so as to build up muscle endurance, none of the excersises are performed totaly strict (apart from the core ones) as being a strongman means getting the weight up by whatever means your body can muster

like i say feel free to criticise and pick over the bones of this routine ;)

So f*cking True. I go out there to battle untill the end, my gf asked me if "you were ahead by so much that you can't be beat no matter what you did what would you do on the last event" I stated the obvious to my mind give all I had because I train to succeed or die, no use sitting on my ego at home a winner who never tried, than a man who got last and gave it his all. So this means get down and dirty, be the most viscous man possible. Relish in the pain of what you are doing and know others aren't as willing to do what it takes. I know it is sick but when it comes time to train it is war because not one of your competitiors is gonna say "lets go esy on him cause he didn't train his grip". They are gonna exploit it and use against you at every turn. Every weakness need to be adressed and attacked, doesn't matter what routine as long as you work on the weaknesses

With you and B-true I can hear some patriotic strongman music (bagpipes) echoing across the glenns. Seriously this is the only way to view give it your all, all the time or just pack it in and go home. Because you can damn well be sure that if you aren't doing all you can someone else will. Then the only thing you can say when you take a lower placing is "I could have done more but didn't" when you give it your all and still get beaten then you can still hold your head high and get your ass back into training for the next time.

Cheers,
Scotsman
