A serious question

How the hell do you stay motivated. I can certainly get on the band wagon and stay there for all of two weeks and fall off for a month. I have never had this issue until I gave birth to my daughter a year ago. I have the hardest time staying on the gym track and eating clean. I know I will not lose this last dress size until I can keep myself motivated. Give me some of your motivation factors please.

also an Ipod with some of your get down and rock songs helps also.

its mind over matter ,if you can't do this then it doesn't matter.

Also when you feel like this pm me i'll have you so motivated you'll be dying to get in the gym, I have trained everyone here from the adverage joe to bodybuilders, 2 weeks ago i had a first place winner in the heavyweight division.so quit making excuses an get to work ,the road to success begins with just one step!

There are some things that have always helped me.....but mostly, it's a drive to be in the best shape possible, all the time, for me. If you don't have that internal drive, then maybe some of these things can help?

Set short term goals. I always have a big race coming up, or some kind of public event.....about a month apart, that I focus on. If you give yourself short-term goals, and put them end to end.....pretty soon you realize you have been actually meeting your long term goal.

I have fitness magazines all over my house. I look at them when I am feeling un-motivated.....seeing all those fit models and reading success stories will always get me up and to the gym, even on days where I'm just burnt out.

Seeing real changes happening is a huge motivator. If you haven't seen a lot of changes in your body for the amount of work you are putting in, then perhaps you should review what you are doing, and change things up to be more effective. Once those changes start happening, it just helps to motivate so much more!

I can't/will not work out without my Ipod. I have a ton of music that motivates the hell out of me, and it's a crucial instrument in my daily workout. Music can be HIGHLY motivating, and if you don't already do this, then this is the first thing I'd change.

That's about all I can think of right now....like I said, I just have this internal drive to challenge myself every day, and working out is one of those ways I do it. Not everyone is like that, but hopefully these ideas might help a bit?? :) Good luck!!

Sounds like your priorities have changed. Finding it hard to focus on something that may feel trivial by comparison, or maybe just presses you for time, is totally understandable.

In this sort of situation I try to remember what it was I used to love about lifting and reconnect with that feeling. If you never really liked lifting or cardio then that won't work for you. The motivational "hook" is obviously going to be unique for everyone.

My best diet tip is to not bring "red light foods" into your house. All of us have those late night cravings. When I'm searching at night and there is no chocolate or ice cream I get a little frustrated, but then I calm down and eat a spoonful of peanut butter and some skim milk. Not piling it on late at night has done wonders for me.

I stay motivated because I feel better when I am in shape. Any time I let myself go even a little bit I feel like crap. Also, another thing that motivates me and I know it may sound silly, but I am always looking at pics and videos of women in the fitness industry. I get motivated because I always tell myself "I want my legs to look like that" etc.

Radar is right about the music too. I could be tired when I get home and just not feeling the gym at all. I can put some of my favorite tunes on and blast it and then all of a sudden I have this burst of energy in me. Music tends to do that to me because I love it. :)

I agree with Rebecca! I try to keep certain foods out of my home and I posted a goal pic of Stacey Oster Thompson on my Frigs her Figure pic that keeps me from eating crap!
I also get up in the morning and think about my goals before I get out of bed and clear my mind of yesterdays struggles at night.

Well, I tell myself that I really deserve to be in great shape and be the healthiest I can be.
For me, it's a little boost of additional self-care that helps me feel great. It's therapy for me. I always feel better after having gone to the gy,m, even if it's not a day where I feel like pushing it to the limit. On those days where I feel a little tired, I don't do as much, as hard, or as long.
I don't have kids, so I can't relate there, but I could see myself wanting to take care of my body so I can take care of my child the best way I can, and be as healthy as I can to be a good role model as well as having a better quality of life.
My biggest obstacle is losing motivation as the day goes on, so I work out first thing before work. It takes some planning, but it's doable.

I am not a status snob by any means, but its motivating to know you are in the top 1% of the population as far as the shape you are in.

Get some good music, toss all the junk food you have at home, and start sweating!

Thank you ladies for the tips. Some I already follow and others are new for me. My biggest problem is actually getting myself to the gym. I am so pissed at myself for the stupid-ass excuses I make. I own a home preschool so I am home with my kids all day. I should want to get away from them at the end of the day. But my main excuse is wanting to sit down and relax after the other children are gone. Lord knows I haven't a moment to sit during the day. What's even worse is I am a certified personal trainer and nutritionist. I suck!!!! ;)

I have a Zune with over 2000 songs on it so the music factor isn't a problem. I do all the grocery shopping so I hold my self accountable for what I buy which is not tastey cakes or fried chicken. I know my problem is psychological and I have to psych myself in to working out consistently again.

Thanks for the advice. I just got back from the gym and feeling pretty good.

Actually seeing changes gets me going. The first couple of weeks it takes work. After that I have to keep myself from OVERDOING it. Comments from people noticing my hard work help. I also happen to work out at what I jokingly call "the serious people gym" because of the disproportionately high number of seriously fit people who go there. There are a few women who obviously compete (one who is competing in figure in the upcoming npc nationals) who, when I see them there, it's an extra bump of motivation.

Also, another thing that motivates me and I know it may sound silly, but I am always looking at pics and videos of people in the fitness industry. I get motivated because I always tell myself "I want my legs to look like that" etc.

I do to !

Dear thread starter I am no Doctor, but Doctor like when I personally have a challenge.

For you I would consider:

~Doing a Hormone panel to make sure issues with mood or stress are not endocrine related. When you get a Green light you know its just your mind vs your body.

~Pre-Workout Fat Burner , save a good Fat Burner to give you that flame you need to facilitate a workout.; Just for working out once per day.

~Support: Get a Friend online or in the gym to touch basis with at least 2 times a week.

Sometimes I'll lose motivation and then get too comfortable from not going into the gym. But then I start to not like how I'm looking and know that I need to make that effort to get to the gym because once I am there, I am ready to kill it!

How about a training partner? Sometimes that helps when you know that someone is waiting for you at the gym to train.

Visible results are a huge motivator for me. When my physique is not transforming as quickly as my mind demands, I do the following:

Stay AWAY from the mirror for a few weeks(i.e posing, assessing different muscle groups...)
Keep up consistent training and clean eating
Visual the changes I'd like to see
When I return to mirror and notice the positive changes I am super motivated to stay diligent in my efforts!

Oh and I also watch the replay of the Figure Olympia every night before I go to bed... I am such a nerd lol

Good luck and have faith in the process!
