Does anyone else playout these scenerios in their head, thinking how to either escape or disarm people in a potential attack? Not sure if that would give me an edge or not. Been pointed at once (point blank) and ducked when I was like 17, had to testify and put the dude in prison - his brother tracked me for about a year....scary shit.
I live in Ocean View and there have been tons of hate crimes in this area alone (I am not saying this shooting was race related but it looks gang related). I am about 5 miles away from the shooting.
This shooting really bothers me and it happens all the time here. I go jogging late at night sometimes - like at 10 pm and this could easily happen to me. I do not own a gun but I am seriously considering getting one. I see all of the freaks out near the beach at night - in the summer it is really bad. Drug dealers, gangs (and some nice homeless people).
I keep damn aware of my surroundings when I am out and about. Based on the news article, it looks like he got shot in broad daylight. In a situation like that there is really no quick way to react. Hell, I am trained and I have been to combat and what happened to him is just wrong - nobody could have reacted.
I always tell my wife to not hit ATMs at night, to not go shopping at night, etc. There was a nurse who was raped by the hospital (right near where Lt Cox got shot) and she was in the parking lot at 5 pm simply walking out the door leaving to go home.
IMo being aware of your surroundings is the best thing but in some situations it is impossible.
The DA and the police force here in Norfolk is a joke. I won't gt into it in this thread but they are doing nothing to control the gang situation. I drive by at least three cops driving into school each day and they will pull you over if you drive more than 5 mph over the limit but when it comes to gang control they turn the other way. It is highly politicized in this area and I will just leave it at that.
I am so torn up reading these article - I pray for his family and I hope they get the guys who did this.
