9 people dead in Santa Monica

This whole tragedy seems avoidable to me. Guarnteed that if there were mandatory renewal exams after a certain age, all 9 people would still be alive because that guy wouldn't have been on the road.

Witnesses said that they kept hearing the engine rev up as he was hitting people as if he gave it more gas time and time again.

The last thing I need to worry about is my wife and daughter standing on a corner and getting run over by someone who has no business driving a big wheel, much less a car.

Its amazing that everyone (liberal, conservative, women, man, black, white, christian, jewish) believe that the elderly shouldbe required to prove their ability to drive after a certain age. yet the politicians are all afraid to do something because the elderly vote at higher rates than the rest of america.

Maybe now the legislatures will be forced to finally do something about it.

It will happen, One state at a time now that the "Old Fart State" has started the roll...

Legislatures are mostly comprised of people that fit into this demographic.

And with the Baby Boomers hitting retirement age, they make up a very power lobby against anything that could be construed at taking rights away from the elderly.

Velvett,

4th Street on the Promendade is where I play chess. We have the chess park about 3 blocks away... and Border's Books which is sandwiched between 3rd and 4th street. The little farmers' market has always been a bright ray of sunshine on the downtown. I'm still waiting to find out which of the homeless guys was killed. We think it was one of the guys we play chess with.

This isn't the first time I've seen this. The worst car wreck I've ever seen was an 86 year old woman driving her 91 year old sister in a big Lincoln Continental... and plowing through the three cars in front of her at a stop light. She didn't even slow down.

My girlfriend just took her dad's car away. He is 77, has had a stroke, and can't see to drive - and yet he refused to "give up his independence."

I'm a little militant on this issue. I think there should be mandatory YEARLY testing for all drivers over the age of 65. Driving is a privilage... not a right. There are way too many unsafe elderly drivers on the road... and families are not taking the responsiblity to get them from out of behind the wheel.

This is a state regulated issue, how strong is the AARP lobby in the individual states? My guess is that they would be all over this issue.

Annual License renewal exams.

I read this early. Very sad indeed.

This is how it is here in my province and honestly, this is probably the only good thing from liberal politicians in years.
