jesus god, when is this going to stop

PSP: Soldier killed on 9th deployment - Soldier killed on 9th deployment

I'm blown away that my daughters school is doing care packages for christmas...

I remember putting together care packages in 03' when we first deployed

how the hell long is this going to go on for?? my older kids think this is just the norm that everyone knows a soldier...everyone knows a soldier that has died...everyone knows one thats deployed

am I the only one that thinks this is insane???

I'm not surprised by the multiple tours. I know guys in the Canadian Forces who keep going back to Afghanistan...the lure of the higher pay is just to great for them to turn down...they look at it as a way to 'get ahead' and save up for their family's future. It's kind of like criminals who keep going back for 'just one last big score' over and over again...eventually your number is going to come up.

idk...its not like either of us ever had a choice as to whether we went or not...if someone did a 8/8 hitch theyre screwed and don't have a choice

plank...stfu

A friend of mine who I used to play guitar with in high school became a Marine Force Recon sniper. He said after his first tour he had $15,000 sitting in his bank account, because you really can't use your money on anything over there and you stay on base the whole time. That + GI Bill for college = he's got a shit ton of money sitting around.

15k isnt a lot of money

I suppose if someone wants to deploy nine fricken times thats on them...

I think its nuts that we'd have to have someone deploy 9 times..even if the tours are incredibly shorter than say...vietnam

oh, and my husbands va disability check is bigger than both our GI bills combined..or was till he switched to chapter 33

I'd rather he didnt have eligibility for that one

oh sure...lemme get right on posting up financial statements...you want the 401ks and copies of bonds too?

LOL, I would expect a developed person to have way more money than that. We're talking about kids straight out of high school, and a lot of them would think an extra 15k sitting there waiting on them to blow on drugs and alcohol when they get home is pretty awesome, hence why a lot of the soldiers really don't mind doing multiple tours. It sucks for that guy to finally get unlucky on his 9th, but they all know it could happen at any time.

as opposed to a fetus? lolz

what sucks is those same kids gettin blown away in their first tour...hell...weeks into it and they never had a chance.

I enlisted late in the game and I'll never forget the surreal experience of having a kid/pvt standup and say that he enlisted to defend his country cuz the world trade center went down when he was a freshman in high school.

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
not that my reasons were any better than anyone elses...I wanted experience in a CSH and knew I was a decent medic and wanted to help soldiers in the field.
what I mostly saw was kids from families that were well below the poverty line and thought this would be a great "job" and big earnings , a few that wanted a free ride for college and some that really just had nowhere else to go or nothing else to do.

my point is...9 tours?? thats insane...everyone bitches about the cost of things like...universal healthcare and lib spending...what about the cost of this?????

I mean, a project my husband was working on a cpl months ago was costing the government a cpl million dollars and it never came to fruition in terms of a useable defense product....thats NUTS
over the course of my husbands life (assuming he lives another 40 yrs) they'll have spent close to a million dollars on him and he only served three years...

I just got back from Brooke Army Medical Hospital and the Army Institute of Surgical Research. If you want something sobering, walk around the wards and visit with the recently injured. We visited two men, one who was a recent double amputee and the other was a recent triple amputee. Then we toured their rehabilitation center where we saw single, double and triple amputees trying to put their lives back together.

The resilience of these guys was amazing. Most of them are ready to go back and be with their units. Obviously that won't happen, but they do have a program where they can visit and provide support for their fellow soldiers.

I am not rich, but I wouldn't go to Iraq for a million bucks.

For 10 million I'd think about it.

Iraq ain't that bad. It's Afghanistan that's the shithole cuz eveyrone and their mother hates the us and all we've done is put the Taliban in power pretending to be politicians. So much for fighing for their freedoms lol!

An Army trauma surgeon told me there are cities in Mexico that are more threatening than Iraq or Afghanistan. I believe the term he used was: "we were rolling tighter" when referencing Mexico. It may be worse down there than we realize.

Ok, add Afghanistan and Mexico to my "do not travel" list.

List is growing...

b0und (staying home this xmas anyway)

i work with a guy who is going on his 5th tour
15 months, left a few weeks ago...bro seemed casual about it.
family man too...i'm more of a e-warrior i think

I have friends who are volunteering for their 3rd and 4th go rounds. It's money, and once you've been it's a lot easier to go back.
