In terms of the equivalent amount of TNT for the seismic energy yield, the earthquake today was equivalent to 336 megatons of TNT which is an awful lot of TNT you will have to admit. To give you an idea of how energetic this event was though the largest thermonuclear bomb ever tested only equated to 50 megatons. This event today was more than 6 times more energetic than the biggest nuke man ever thought to inflict on itself. The thing that puts this in even more context though is that the Nagasaki nuclear bomb had a seismic energy yield of just 474 metric tons. So the event today was about 700,000 times more powerful than the Nagasaki nuclear bomb.

for humankind the take-away from this massive earthquake is how fortunate we are that most of our planet is covered by ocean. Had this monster occurred on land, given how densely populated all our landmasses are now, this would have killed millions.
