5x5 Questions

I'm on week two of the 5x5.
A couple of questions?
Can I do the hack squat or plate loaded squat in place of regular squat.
Can I do the sit down military press as opposed to stand up?
Thanks for any help.

I have to do sit down military presses, my ceiling is only about 6 and a half feet high downstairs. I've had great results, so I don't see a problem.

I would try to do regular squats, as it is more of a whole body stress that you are looking for.

The spinal loading when seated is actually greater than when standing. This is one of the many things I learned last night when reading Facts & Fallacies of Fitness by Dr. Mel C. Siff. Very informative. I wouldn't do them seated. I drag my olympic bar and the plates I need outside to do my OHPs.

lol, can't really argue with that. Damn, I've just checked and when I get up to 1 plate each side, I might have the same problem.

I wouldn't do them kneeling. That would put a lot of pressure on the knees.

I have done seated military and behind the neck BB presses for over a year now. I can see where the pressure sitting is greater on the spine then standing, but I concentrate on my form. Early on I pulled many a back muscle doing them and was going to stop them, but I am able to do them pain and injury free now.

if you can do them standing then thats the way to go, but if you do them seated make sure you are careful and watch that last rep that you start to breeak form to complete.

Even with proper form it puts undue stress on the lumbar spine. Might not injure you directly, but weakening the back is never a good thing.

One more question.
Actually two.
I do the DB curl on day three.
Would a BB curl be better?
Especailly since i need to up my DB by 5lbs.

No, and....yes, you can, but standing is a better overall strength exercise

No need to do any DB curls...Do a 5x5 of close grip pull up once a week and that is all you need....don't futz too much with the routine. Stick with the basics, once you can stand on the scale at around 230lbs and need some work in your biceps then you can start throwing in Bodybuilding isolation exercises in there.

Thanks.
Will do.
