500 grams of protein per day while cutting?

Okay, the local gym know it all bodybuilder that weighs 170 lbs. was telling me that I should be eating 400-500 grams of protein/day to prevent muscle loss while I'm cutting. This has to be the most ridiculous thing I've heard. 500 g would be 2,000 calories just from protein. I've dropped my total calories to 1,500. My bulking cycles are only about 2,500 calories.
How can you even eat 500g/day while bulking? The human body can only absorb small amounts of protein at a time (probably 30grams or so) So what's the point of eating 500g, it's just going to be shit out, pissed out, or stored as fat.

Im over 250lbs and I only get between 200-250g of protien a day weather bulking or cutting and I never have a problem keeping mass or adding mass for that matter.

500 grams is overkill and it can be toxic to your body... 1 gram per pound of body weight is plenty...the key to bulking up is carbs alot of them

it's actually 2 grams of protein per pound of body weight!
If that were the case I would not be adding 15-20lbs per cycle AND losing BF at the same time since I usually get less than 250g of protien at over 250lbs.

fuck it, what is the problem with u fucking people? always got to come up with a clever answer...

Here in the U.K we take 2 grams protein per pound of bodyweight o.k!!!!

relax bro if it works for you then go for it...for me it just makes for some serious gas and not that much in terms of lean muscle

Overkill.

Go with 0.80-1.20 grams/pound

That much protein gives you expensive pee.

Well - I think that 30 grams per meal is Bullshit. I mean, if I eat a steak I don't crap big undigested pieces of meat, you know.

some pros do eat over 400g protein a day, so it can be done-300 ought to be enough for the average guy

True but 400 grams at a weight of 300 pounds is close to the 1.2 mark

Uhh... That's not what I was saying. If you eat a big steak you'll crap a bunch of digested protein. When I said that your body won't absorb that much protein I meant that it won't actually use that much for increasing muscle mass.

LOL!!!

Damn - people can't tell when I'm joking...

400 grams of protein per day? Well, the main proponents of this one have always been the ones who stand the most to gain from it...no not the kid who wants to make the varsity team, or the elite strenght athleet...NO! The ones with the most to gain from the perpetuation of this myth, yes MYTH, is the supplement companies.

Celluar absorption rate is much like a bucket of water. If you have a 5 gallon buckett and pour in 8 gallons, you have, yup, 5 gallons in the bucket. The rest is wasted away. Much like protein.

The more you eat the more you buy. Its that simple. 1-1.5 per pound is sufficient. REALLY.

500 grams of protein is bullshit!

I even consider 2g per pound to much. That is just to be on
the safe side. Most people don't know how much they
really need, so they eat rather too much protein than too little.
For me it seems waste of money to eat so much protein.

I eat no more than 2 grams per kg, that is something in the
range of 0.9 g per pound. And I am growing like weed.

Then there is a difference between normal people and the big
guys. Let us take a normal 170 lbs man. He has probably
40% muscle tissue, =68 lbs (I don't know, just a guess),
some 20% body fat, =34 lbs, and the rest is other tissue and
bones, =68 lbs.
Let us assume the same man grows to a 250 lbs pro BB
with 8% bodyfat. How many muscle tissue he will have?
The other tissue and bones haven't grown too much.
So, he will have approx.:
Other tissue and bones: maybe 80 lbs
Fat 20 lbs
Muscle tissue: 150 lbs

The man has raised his body weight by 47%, but his muscles
by 120%. Now he definitely needs a higher protein intake,
not just in total, but also by body weight.
While in the beginning with 1 g per 1 pound body weight
he gave his muscles 2.5 g protein per pound muscles (supposed
all is used for muscle building, I know it is not), that
would be just 1.66 grams per pound muscles as a pro BB.
That is much less. If he wants to keep the 2,5 g per pound
muscle tissue he needs 375 grams of protein. And that is
1.5 g per pound bodyweight.

So therefore I think you are all right. The more you look like
Arnold the more protein you need per pound of bodyweight.

What do you think? Am I completely wrong? The numbers
might be wrong, but the principle is clear.

No offense bro, but until you can show me medical trials showing ideal amouns of protien for BBer's/powerlifter etc, "what the guys in the UK take" doesnt mean jack shit. If it works for you, great, but telling everyone they need 2g per lb of bodyweight is bullshit.

Bump, this is interesting...

All should check out the sticky on diet board that says you should do 2xbw in protein... Mr. X posted, so it's credible...

Thats the crazy thing about the human body, no two are identicle. While some guy may need 2g per lb, many will not need it to grow or grow and lose fat. At my weight that means I would need 500g or protien a day to make decent gains and that is just not the case. I am making decent gains on 200-250g of protien a day.

i beleive it depends on your background and what amounts of protein you have been accustomed to absorbing ever since early on in life...i was consuming 400g protein/day at a bwt of 200 lbs...although i made considerable gains,i made much more impressive gains while on the zone...(40c-30p-30f);all this to say that nothing should be written in stone as far as diet and experimentation will lead you to what works for YOU...

i agree..... many of us are still young, and we have to experiment with what works best for US. hell, if we go one cycle trying to figure out if 1g/lb is enough and dont gain like we would like to, then next time raise it a bit. its not difficualt to add more protien to a diet. just try different ratios and see what works best

I'm 230lbs and take in about 225-250g protein/day. I have no problem gaining mass. I think anything over 1-1.2g/lb is overkill.

I'm glad most of you agree that 500 is bullshit. I'd go broke trying to get that much.
